It was a busy week. Here's the highlights of the different things I worked on: • Troubleshooting a critical and subtle problem with VMware ESXi and a SAN; • Maintaining an even keel during that high-stress, low-stress situation -- can't say I entirely succeeded, but I'm always improving; • Learning how to use inexpensive Raspberry Pi hardware for factory environmental monitoring; • Completing the draft of a new website for a new business division at the KS Group; • Training team members on EDI workflows for sales orders, forecasts, etc. Variety is the spice of life? Something like that.

I've been thinking about writing a sysadmin 101 guide for ages. It would of course contain dumb jokes and sage life advice. First chapter is called "Assume the Backups are Broken." I learned by watching other people's bad experiences that a new sysadmin will often inherit a file server or database server or what-have-you with non-functioning backups. And when that system inevitably fails, that'll be the day that you find out the backups are broken. Also when you will learn that there is no documentation on the restore process (which no one has ever tested) and indeed no documentation on even who the impacted users are. If you are a new sysadmin, I can pretty much guarantee the backups are bad and it is the first thing you will want to check when starting a new job. There is probably some life lesson in that.

Just a reminder that support for Classic Microsoft Teams ended on July 1, 2024, and the "NEW" label will also be removed from the new Teams app icon in mid to late July 2024.   Users who are still using Classic Teams may receive in-app messages notifying them that the client is no longer supported.   From mid-July to late July 2024, Microsoft will remove the "NEW" label from the new Teams application. The application will be known as Microsoft Teams without any additional labels, and this change will apply to all platforms and users.   Users are advised to update their operating systems and Microsoft Teams to prevent any disruptions. Spent about 2 hours with ChatGPT today to write and refine a PowerShell script to filter through a bunch of trash data*. When it started getting desired outputs confused it was nice to be able to correct it (frustrating at times). When I started asking it to refine the filters for Big-O (optimization) it knew what I wanted and condensed a bunch of conditional steps it had built with various Regex's into just three steps and two regexes. It skipped commenting what various parts of the regex were doing, so I prompted it to document those as documentation costs nothing. Those that have written a regex once regret not explaining in comments what it was supposed to do (the regex joke is: write once, use once). Had I done any of this alone, I'm certain I would have used the remainder of my day today and most of tomorrow. It helped me get my thoughts out, correct myself (and it), test conditional data, and refactor the code to do more. It wasn't easy and it required me knowing when it was messing up. It helped me collect old thoughts and forgotten things I had learned 25 years ago. I don't know that I'd use it to create mission critical code, but to clean up trash data, sure! As always, test, test, test, and test some more. *I don't code every day or even every week or month. It's nice to have a tool to bounce ideas off of and streamline your thoughts (and your code). If you've read this far and think that ChatGPT or other AI will replace coders you are sorely mistaken. At times it was like dealing with a highly confused toddler that has an encyclopedia set its juggling because it wants to.

I keep meaning to go on here more often than I do and I am trying to do so, my colleague David Vasquez has been documenting his progress in his home lab and it makes me think I should get off my butt and do some myself. I have set up a very basic InTune/autopilot environment for my 3D printing side hustle just as a way to show what it can do and how it can be used to deploy devices very rapidly. It's also a good testing ground, but I have been thinking about making a VM environment for testing autopilot deployments. So that will likely be my project for the weekend after the farmers market. it's funny how quickly it goes from wishing you had hardware to do projects like this, to having so much that you don't do projects because you forget what you have at times. A side effect of fatherhood I say, sure that sounds good! And as David mentioned for his projects I will be documenting my progress, probably on our website I never utilize. Because just doing it for myself isn't really helping anything. I already know I can do it and I'm far more interested in helping others learn. Many, many, many people have helped me learn throughout my life, it is only fair I repay that with sharing what I know.

I was turned over some credentials to remote into a device to provide troubleshooting. The person said, "I don't know why but you have to still enter the enable password even if you set the privilege level correctly." "Well it has to be the AAA settings," I said, not fully knowing what was done yet. Sure enough the authentication was set to none. Nothing doing there. So here is a quick video to show how the authentication needed to point to either the server group, local, or something else. For my example I did order as the TACACS server then local - adding the condition if the router is authenticating to the server.
