The FTC has been asking, warning, and even demanding certain actions from Auto Dealership's. The CDK news is unfortunate, and we have sympathy for those affected. If you want to run your operations properly, you need ARMD. Here is a simple explanation of the law to help you figure out what to do if a breach has happened. With this, you can comply with GLBA which has been in effect since 2003. It’s time to get ARMD.

A look inside becoming a first-time franchise dealership owner: Today, record dealership profits over the past few years are attracting new interest in ownership. Yet — dealership consolidation is not slowing down, and the options for new entrants are shrinking. And for the average salesman, F&I manager, or GM who wants to own their first dealership outright — it’s harder than ever. But it is still possible… Enter Kyle Coleman, who, after 18 years in the business, bought his first two dealerships and quickly added a third in just seven months. I interviewed Kyle on the Car Dealership Guy Podcast and was floored by his story. Inspired by Brett Morgan’s episode, Kyle started seriously looking for a dealership to buy, hitting the phones, and consulting with a private equity firm for advice. The turning point came when he found a dual-point Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Ford dealership for sale in rural Iowa. He narrowed down his selection to that store and a more expensive metro location… And the deciding factor for Kyle was each store’s market efficiency. By zeroing in on the potential of the rural market — he saw an opportunity to boost profits at the dealership faster. In the end, he landed a solid deal, paying a 2x multiple on the store’s net profit from the past 24 months. So, the opportunities are out there — but the trade-off could be living in a more remote area. Regardless, he said first-time buyers must be financially prepared with good credit and at least 1M in liquid capital. Because costs can accumulate quickly—from legal fees to environmental inspections. Kyle also said to get used to hearing “no” from lenders when trying to finance. In his case, he got creative. Ultimately — Kyle opted for Small Business Administration (SBA) financing for its real estate perks and flexible terms. But after closing, the real work began — Maximizing profits at the dealers requires a lot of attention to detail and for dealers, focusing on core competencies is vital. In Kyle’s case, it’s the finance department. By implementing a clear strategy, he transformed an underperforming finance department into a key profit center. But he didn’t just focus on processes — he also invested in his team by retaining as many original employees as possible and offered raises to incentivize hard work. One key player is his finance manager, who commutes from Indiana to Iowa three weeks out of the month. Bottom line: Kyle is betting big on himself and his people — he even started his own private equity firm to fund his journey to 40 rooftops. I’m excited to see where he goes from here.
