This is an interesting look at SEO misconceptions including a word of caution from Quentin Aisbett at Searcht "AI doesn't replace human insight. SEO is an industry where misconceptions have run rampant for years, and 2024 will be no different. However, one misconception which I expect will take hold this year as we see AI further develop is this: SEO can be automated with AI. Beyond AI-generated content or keyword research, we're going to see a flood of AI agents promising to supersede the role of an SEO agency. Yes, there is a whole range of opportunities to become more productive with the use of AI and AI agents. However, the problem with relying too much on AI is that you end up with more of the same, whether that be content or tactical. And if there appears to be one takeaway from the significant Google updates in March, it's that you want to focus on originality. So, I would caution any business considering an AI-based SEO agent, as I did with AI-generated content 12 months ago."

A point I always find myself repeating when answering editorial and on-page SEO questions. The image below was an answer specific to links and word count but it works for everything. SEO practice is rule of thumb, it’s not a magic formula to generate traffic, the content always comes first. There isn’t a magic checklist you can work through and all of a sudden every article you publish will generate 1000s of PVs within the hour - even if it did, not every page should. Consider the context of what you’re writing, the audience, the desired impact. You could be writing a breaker, an explainer, evergreen or a feature. What might make sense in one article may not make sense in the next. SEO is not there to change journalism it’s just to help search engines better understand it and as a result showcase your work to more people. If it works for your readers it will generally work for SEO. A lot of people try to overcomplicate it but if you follow that rule you won’t go far wrong. #seo #newsseo #journalism #google

Since the August Core Update 2024 has started rolling out, HouseFresh.com has been at the forefront of post-HCU recovery. Here’s what I’ve noted: 📈 Significant Rankings Increase: Their rankings have ascended in this update like no other site I’ve encountered. 🔍 Strategic SEO Efforts: Post-HCU, they’ve made substantial progress—elevating their DA from 43 to 58, refining on-page SEO, and enhancing UX. 🏅 Enhanced EEAT: Their Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness (EEAT) have notably strengthened. Interestingly, despite similar efforts, many other sites haven't experienced the same positive trend. 💼Possibly Manual Influence: To me, this recovery for HouseFresh.com appears more manual than algorithmic at this stage, especially given the influential article they published on Google’s HCU. SEO TIP! CMS & Domain Migration advice: ⚠ 1. If you do not know what you are doing DO NOT DO IT - even if you are unsure, seek professional guidance, migrations can wreak havoc ⚠ 2. EVEN IF you do a CLEAN migration - when changing CMS or DOMAIN you are almost GUARANTEED to see position losses/fluctuation, index drop out and changes in your index profile - you need to prepare for this and notify stakeholders ⚠ 3. Before ANY migration is performed - you need to understand pitfalls and known configuration issues within any target CMS, these need to be addressed PRE migration, for example if you were to move from Woocommerce to Shopify, you would address Shopify's awful canonical configuration beforehand ⚠ 4. Before you do ANY SORT OF MIGRATION you absolutely MUST clean up: ✅ Internal 301s/302s/308s - get rid so you do not end up with redirect chains ✅ Internal 404s & external 404s - don't migrate broken internal or external links ✅ Clean up internal links that are inconsistent i.e. www vs non, trailing slash vs non trailing slash ✅ Clean up your canonical configuration (if you have lots of canonical mess that's built up over time - you'll want to ensure this stuff doesn't end up in your migration) ✅ You'll want to REDUCE non indexed page issues prior to a migration, this will reduce the "carry over" effect which can cause indexing issues ✅ If you have a large volume of "alternate page with proper canonical tags" you will want to look at what these are - see if there are things such as double trailing slashes, repetitive sub folders, parameters - the idea is to REDUCE child canonicalisation pre-migration - you don't want to carry over whatever created a large volume of canonical child URLS ✅ If changing domain or CMS, perform a CONTENT AUDIT and perform a PRE MIGRATION cull to minimise the carry over of NON VALUE content - this is important, even if just changing CMS you wouldn't believe how bad Google can be with indexing - some sites that change CMS where there is lots of weak/dead content can see a sudden surge in content being dumped into crawled/discovered currently not indexed ✅If changing domain build a redirect map based off URLS that are indexed & served - prior to this, you should consider a content audit pre-migration to ensure you aren't migrating content that's dead/of no value and would likely not be indexed on the target CMS/domain ✅If changing DOMAIN - ensure that your target content (if copied over) isn't referring to the old domain ✅Export crawled/discovered currently not indexed, HTTP check it, filter out all active content, ascertain cull or keep ⚠ 6. Ensure you have ENFORCED URL policies (where you have control) ➤ Ensure HTTPS/WWW vs NON WWW/Trailing slashes are handled correctly and consistently ⚠ 7. Make sure your target CMS has robots.txt set up and configured correctly ➤ Post migration, ensure robots.txt is HTTP 200 ⚠ 8. Ensure all tags are set up and configured properly #seo #seotips
