Congratulations to Israeli Digital Health venture Nucleai for their remarkable achievement in raising $14 million in funding, led by Merck Group’s VC arm, M Ventures 🎉 Nucleai's groundbreaking work in leveraging AI and machine learning to analyse pathology images and spatial data at cellular and tissue levels. Their proprietary technology extracts detailed patterns and features from medical images, providing invaluable insights into the tumour microenvironment, cellular morphology, and spatial relationships between different cell types. This round, led by M Ventures, and support by existing investors, brings Nucleai's total funding to an impressive $60 million. Notable backers include S32, Sanofi Ventures, Debiopharm, 复星锐正资本 FOSUN RZ Capital , Vertex Ventures Israel, and Grove Ventures. The life science panelists at Asian American Pioneer Medal Symposium are inspiring the audience with great insights 1. The development of new AI tools is facilitating faster and more cost-effective progression of drugs to the clinic, with regional companies at the forefront of these advancements. Additionally, efforts to generate, standardize, and share biological data are expected to enhance the power of AI models. At HLTH USA 2024, the “How Purpose-Built AI is Transforming Healthcare” panel explored how AI is reshaping the healthcare landscape, with insights from Joe Petro and Dr. Eric Horvitz of Microsoft. Bertha Coombs, Senior Healthcare Reporter at CNBC, opened the discussion by raising questions around how generative AI can address some of healthcare’s biggest challenges: privacy, security, interoperability, but also provide clinical value. Joe Petro, CVP at Microsoft Health & Life Sciences, emphasized Microsoft’s four pillars in healthcare: connecting care teams, enabling collaboration, empowering frontline workers, and leveraging the immense potential of digital data. With AI, data is the new source code, and this requires robust solutions for security, access, and management in healthcare environments. He shared how Microsoft’s AI models are transforming medical fields like radiology, pathology, and genomics, and how these tools are supporting clinicians by making healthcare more efficient and scalable. Dr. Eric Horvitz, Chief Scientific Officer at Microsoft, discussed the exciting future of AI in medicine, particularly the rise of multimodal AI models. These systems combine data from multiple sources—such as medical images, genomic data, and clinical information—to create more comprehensive diagnostic tools. Eric also highlighted federated learning, a technique that enables learning from multiple sites without sharing sensitive data, allowing AI models to improve continuously across diverse healthcare environments. In a conversation with Alexandra Drane, CEO of ARCHANGELS, at the HLTH USA, Greg Adams, Chair and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, shared an emotional and impactful patient story that illustrates the importance of coordinated care. Adams recounted a recent story of an 89-year-old patient who faced a blocked colon and life-threatening sepsis. After the immediate danger was stabilized, the family was left with difficult decisions about what came next. At 90 years old and frail, the patient’s future seemed uncertain. In just 24 hours, a multidisciplinary team—orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, neurosurgeons, mental health professionals, cardiologists, and more—came together. They conducted tests, reviewed the data, and sat down with the family to discuss their options. Initially, the family was preparing for the worst, thinking it might be time to consider end-of-life decisions. But with the team’s support, they learned that the patient could have the stone removed, offering the chance to return to health. Today, that same 90-year-old is living a full and vibrant life. This story underscores the importance of having access to the right data, a coordinated healthcare team, and the ability to make informed decisions in critical moments. After several days in Denver at American Society for Reproductive Medicine - ASRM, I am more energized than ever about the future of the IVF industry. Our tight Conceivable Life Sciences team delivered 18 presentations to audiences ranging from five to nearly 500, sparking meaningful discussions on the role of automation in advancing IVF (for an example, see the photo our Head of Mechatronics, César Millán Castillo, dazzling a capacity crowd with our automated, robotic C:SPERM workstation in the Mile High Ballroom). Lab directors, in particular, were engaged, informed, and open to exploring how robotic automation can drive better outcomes. A standout moment was watching Mina Alikani, our Director of Scientific Affairs, captivate a discerning audience of High Complexity Lab Directors with her in-depth presentation on AURA's comprehensive testing and validation. Following her talk, Mina, along with Nuno Costa Borges, Adolfo Flores Saiffe Farías, Ph.D., and Jacques Cohen, handled insightful questions on the future of IVF and the need to scale innovation while preparing the next generation of embryologists. Additionally, we had productive meetings with C-suite leaders from some of the largest fertility clinics. These execs were not only open to imagining how robotic automation can enhance their IVF lab operations, but are also keen to explore how it can optimize both CapEx and OpEx while scaling to meet the significant demand that is coming. Finally, the tailwinds from recent IVF mandates out of Washington and California generated palpable buzz in the Mile High halls of the Colorado Convention Center. Now, it's back to work, gearing up for our 100-plus person IRB in January to further validate the impressive results of our initial study, which resulted in 20 pregnancies and outcomes on par with the best clinics in the world.
