The Defense Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA) is making significant strides in the development of uncrewed VTOL aircraft through the #SPRINT and #ANCILLARY programs. The #SPRINT program aims to create a fast 400-450 kph X-plane, while the #ANCILLARY program focuses on enhancing long-endurance small VTOL UAS, tripling current payload/range capabilities. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has entered a formal agreement with North Dakota to share federal radar data, enabling the safe integration and continued testing of beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) drone operations into the National Airspace System (NAS). By sharing this data, UAS traffic management systems can provide real-time information about other aircraft to both the pilot and the drone, ensuring safe navigation beyond the pilot’s line of sight without risking collisions with manned aircraft. This collaboration, facilitated by the Northern Plains UAS Test Site (NPUASTS) and Vantis, North Dakota’s UAS network, allows UAS operators to access and manage airspace more efficiently. The initiative is part of the FAA’s Radar Data Pilot Program, designed to assess #UAS traffic management technologies and expand #BVLOS operations nationwide. ‘Uncontrolled reentries of space objects and aviation safety’, by Charlotte Hook, Ewan Wright, Michael Byers, and Aaron Boley has been published in IAA Acta Astronautica. This article examines the physical risk uncontrolled reentries of space debris presents to the aviation industry and argues that there is substantial economic risk as planes are diverted or delayed to avoid incoming debris. Space companies could be liable under international law for both risks. The article concludes that governments should implemented controlled reenty regimes and invest in better tracking and prediction capabilities for reentries, as recommended in our 2023 Montreal Recommendations.
