A Feminist Approach to Networking Does conventional networking turn you off? You're not alone. I heard a phenomenal talk this past week at the 2024 Conference from the Center for Research on College-Workforce Transitions (CCWT) at UW-Madison. The session was led by Emmeline Prattke and Carley Gomez on: A Feminist Approach to Networking. Many people find the traditional approach to networking—centered on personal gain, competition, and appearances—alienating. It feels transactional, forced, and disconnected. It can be biased toward cultural norms, such as expectations around formality, appearance, and assertiveness, which may not be inclusive of all individuals. A feminist approach to networking is different. It focuses on community, shared growth, and creating comfortable, accessible spaces for everyone. It's about genuine, non-exploitative connections. It invites vulnerability, balance, and a human approach. Networking doesn’t have to be formal or transactional. It can be welcoming, informal, and yet still incredibly impactful. In practice, what does this look like for an individual looking to network, or an organization looking to facilitate networking? For an individual: -Approach networking with a curiosity to learn, not a goal to get a job. This eliminates the power dynamic. -Allow yourself to connect in ways and environments that are most comfortable to you.  -Challenge ideas of professionalism and bring your genuine self. For an organization (i.e. career fair organizer or employer): -Get rid of the dress code. -Set the expectation that employers are there to share their opportunities, not an event for students to get jobs on the spot.  -Find a space that is welcoming and relevant to all identities. -Provide support and services to jobseekers onsite, such as providing them with guidance on what questions to ask. The results are in... In the first two years of the Ohio College Comeback Compact program: ✳ 500 students re-enrolled, generating $1.6M in tuition ✳ 12% of those enrollees have already earned a credential ✳ Re-enrollment rate is more than a full percentage point above the state average. ✳ Boosting equitable access to higher ed, with 61% of enrolled learners identified as a person of color, and 69% were Pell Grant recipients in their previous enrollment. Caregivers are also overrepresented. ReUp is proud of our partnership with the compact and seeing how our 1:1 coaching impacts the lives of learners to make re-enrollment a reality. "Students would say, ‘Yes, I’m interested. I know exactly what I want to do, but what ducks do I need to get in a row now?' ... Implementing the science of reading statewide needs to be more than an approved list of instructional materials. Educators, some excited, some unsure, and (yes) some resistant, must be brought into the planning phases. Due to our decentralized school governance model in the U.S., teachers are the ONLY individuals making the moment-to-moment decision about what instructional strategies are in place for early and struggling readings. So, teachers should be the drivers of what this roll-out looks like. State leaders can set bold goals, make significant commitments and investments, and chart paths. I am still recruiting participants for a qualitative study aiming to understand the factors and mechanisms impacting first-generation public health students’ career choices, focusing on the experiences of first-generation students of color. There are a few spots left! Did you complete a graduate-level degree in Public Health in the last 10 years (2014-2024)?
