There's a good coverage of the interview I gave SAE International in anticipation of my talk at #WCX in #Detroit last week. We discuss how traditional and new automotive companies are different but also beginning to learn from one another. In that interview I also point out that established automakers are exceedingly practiced at R&D, design, engineering, manufacturing and distribution, a process that is sometimes overlooked, dismissed, ignored by newcomers. And I also explain that newcomers are diving headfirst into the digital world, and with software, they can innovate much more quickly because coding something new goes much faster than building new hardware. Stellantis confirmed on Thursday that CEO Carlos Tavares would retire at the end of his contract in early 2026 and announced major senior management changes as it struggles to turn around its lagging North American operations. Earnings and sales in the French-Italian automaker's traditional profit powerhouse have been declining, forcing it to last week cut its 2024 profit forecast and signal possible reductions to its dividend and share buybacks next year. Continental has introduced a groundbreaking vECU Creator tool that leverages virtual electronic control units (vECUs) to streamline vehicle software development. As software plays an increasingly central role in automotive design, the tool enables developers to design, test, and debug software in the cloud, well before physical hardware is finalised. While vECUs can significantly shorten development time, they cannot fully replace physical hardware testing (e.g., hardware-in-the-loop). Hardware validation remains necessary for deployment. Continental plans to showcase its software-defined vehicle demo car, developed using the vECU Creator, at CES in January 2024.
