#fintechs are ruling the #venturecapital in #latinamerica — From April to June 2024, Latin American startups raised $2.2 billion in venture capital, with Brazilian companies leading by securing $1.2 billion. This represents a significant 160% increase compared to the same period last year. Notable investments include $308 million for CloudWalk Pagamentos and $125 million for Celcoin. Mexico and Argentina followed Brazil in terms of funding. Worth noting the Argentine Vercel with $250 million. Fintech startups were the most attractive, securing $1.3 billion in investments. Additionally, deep tech funding surged by 302% year-over-year. Segue o início do texto: "The Playing Field Over the last decade, I’ve interviewed and assessed more than 5,000 investment managers. One of the most important things I’ve learned in that process is what separates the great investors from the rest. The great ones view investing as a game, and they know exactly what game they’re playing. It brings to mind an observation from the philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah: “In life the challenge is not so much to figure out how best to play the game; the challenge is to figure out what game you’re playing.” One great portfolio manager I know told the story of being driven somewhere by an analyst on a rainy night when a truck swerved and almost ran them off the road. “Why is stuff like this always happening to me?” the analyst instinctually responded. But to the portfolio manager, that response reflected a terrible mindset, whether on the road or in the market: a sense that the world is acting on you as opposed to your acting on the world. It is a mindset that is hard to change. But from what I’ve seen, great investors don’t have it. Instead, they’ve come to understand which factors in the market they can control and which factors they cannot. One way to relocate your locus of control is to frame investing (and even life more generally) as a game. This allows you to experience luck as luck, to separate the hand you drew from the playing of that hand. As David Milch, the creator of the HBO show Deadwood, put it, he realized late in life that “it’s the way you learn to play the cards you’ve been dealt, rather than the hand itself, that determines the worth of your participation in the game.” For investors, I’ve come to think of five levels of the game: 1. Apprentice — learning the game 2. Expert — mastering the game you were taught 3. Professional — making the game you were taught fit your own strengths and weaknesses 4. Master — changing the game you play as part of your own self-expression and operating at scale 5. Steward — becoming part of the playing field itself and mentoring the next generation.." Why top global tech Investors are excited about Brazil 🌎 🇧🇷👇🏻 Brazil's tech ecosystem has transformed dramatically since 2015, evolving from a nascent market to a vibrant, thriving hub. Early pioneers like KASZEK, monashees, and Redpoint eventures (Anderson Thees and Manoel Lemos) set the stage, and today, the ecosystem is deeper with more early and later-stage capital providers like Valor Capital Group, Bicycle Capital, and Lightrock. As part of #NYCW, I enjoyed participating in a @Generate-hosted panel discussing Creative Credit Strategies to Build the Transition to Net Zero alongside @Tadeu Carneiro, CEO of @Boston Metal, and @Katie Rae, CEO of @Engine Ventures, and moderated by @Matt Zeitlin of @Heatmap.   It was a pleasure to learn from others on a topic core to Generate's work. A few of my top takeaways include:   Financing the transition to sustainable infrastructure is hard. It will require $9 trillion annually, and $8 trillion of that will be dedicated to building physical assets of which we estimate $5.8 trillion will be in credit. Compare this to a global sustainable bank project market estimated to be $830 billion. This is both an enormous opportunity and an enormous challenge -- and we'll need creative solutions to solve it. Creative credit is key to unlocking the transition. While de-risking climate tech with blended finance solutions has long been the focus of many investors, increasingly investors are seeing the value in de-risking these companies and assets through blended finance for credit. Credit investors need climate market expertise. From community solar to on-site power to green steel, there are so many exciting sustainable infrastructure solutions that are protecting the environment while increasing the resilience of the world's population. But these solutions involve many project-specific complexities, and creating and scaling their markets requires investors who understand (a) how to build them; (b) how to finance them; and (c) how to operate them.    #NYCW #SustainableInfrastructure

Ele depois complementa: JD: The future isn’t predictable like that. I’m a student of history. I’ve watched all the inflection points, (…) I go back to the booming markets of ’72 and the collapse of ’74, the healthy markets of ‘80s and the collapse of ’82. The 1987 market crash, 1990 real estate crash, almost all of them were not predicted the year before. (..) FL: So is unpredictability the new normal? JD: I think it’s been the norm my whole life.
