New Research Report from O-RAN ALLIANCE nGRG RS01 stream was out recently. Its related to usecases and gap analysis of mmWave Antenna Distribution (mWAD). Happy to contribute in this research report. To realize this, an even greater data rate and lower latency communication will be required. For instance, the data rates needed for replicating real objects in virtual spaces for live sports, live music, or the metaverse demand 14-230 Gbps per object for uplink, while on the viewing side, 48-200 Gbps for downlink is necessary. These requirements exceed the capabilities of 5G. This report demonstrates how mWAD can contribute to realizing such a future and clearly identifies its challenges. The dynamics of higher power are very interesting – there are two scenarios. If higher power applied to both GAA and PAL, enterprise/indoor systems are potentially at risk of higher interference (needs more careful analysis given 2 categories of devices, but I suspect there are workarounds and may not be as large as feared). If higher power is applied to PAL only and not GAA, then interference to enterprise or indoor networks will be limited (intra-PAL will coordinate leaving a possibility of interference in case of adjacent PAL/GAA assignments; intra-GAA does not change from present model). Higher PAL power would better justify the money spent on spectrum licenses and a differentiating feature over GAA aside from access hierarchy!

The #lack of #progress in #standalone #5G #deployments highlighted in the GSA May 2024 Market Snapshot Report is a point worth noting. Stalled #Standalone 5G -The report indicates that the number of operators with deployed standalone 5G networks hasn't increased since the end of 2023 (at 49). This suggests a #slowdown in the #rollout of the next-generation 5G technology. Expectations vs. Reality- Standalone 5G promises significant #improvements in network #performance, #efficiency, and #flexibility. The lack of progress could be due to various factors like technical challenges, regulatory hurdles, investment considerations, infrastructure limitations, or delays in developing applications that fully utilize standalone 5G capabilities. Additionally, the transition to standalone 5G networks requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and investments, which can be both costly and time-consuming for operators. Some operators might be in the process of deploying standalone 5G networks that haven't been publicly announced yet. The #microwave industry has reached a consensus on the evolution direction of 5G/5.5G to ultra-broadband, simplified, multi-channel, is fully prepared for the new era Because #microwave #transmission is such a widely adopted technology, each evolutionary advance of the broader industry tends to spur further innovations in microwave in particular The needs of #5G & 5.5G spurred the development of wider, smarter microwave pipes; increasing scarcity of spectrum resources drove more spectral efficiency gains with microwave; the digital transformation of enterprises was met with new microwave solutions tailored to their needs; carriers' commitments to provide universal coverage prompted efforts to bring down the #TCO of microwave technology; with the emergence of new applications like ultra-broadband, multi-channel microwave, ultra-long-haul transmission, microwave again rose to the occasion with new #innovations in planning & delivery The larger bandwidth of 5G and 5.5G puts increasing the capacity of microwave backhaul high on the agenda. I’ve written another piece on US #spectrum policy & #mobile bands - and what should be done in preparation for #WRC27 over the next 3 years. This is part of my ongoing focus on global spectrum-sharing policy, as well as my advisory work with SFTF. This time it has been published via Fierce Network. My view is that the US should directly engage with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) process at multiple levels, to push for greater understanding and technological innovation in sharing approaches. In particular the focus of IMT (ie #5G & #6G) spectrum should be on regulators assuming a “sharing-native” future in the 2030s, instead of the historic focus of assigning exclusive licences. This should be reflected in any figure IMT identifications & footnotes. In addition, it should be a core part of the various study groups and working parties’ efforts. There also needs to be far more realism about mobile traffic on the international stage - its flattening growth, the many non-credible forecasts, its localisation to specific areas & the impact of aspects such as FWA and indoor use. A critical aspect is dealing with the proposed IMT study bands for WRC-27, which seem “coincidentally” to be exactly the same as those used within NATO for military communications. At the moment, the US #CBRS band is one of the leading examples of dynamic spectrum sharing in practice. The work by NTIA & NSF is also advancing the technological base, including the role of AI. It should be advocating this work more globally, especially at ITU. But first, the mainstream US mobile industry needs to get onboard. #spectrumpolicy #telecompolicy #technology #regulation

Once-in-a-generation funding initiatives (including the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment - BEAD - program) have created extensive opportunities for unprecedented broadband infrastructure development in underserved and rural communities. While funding programs hold great promise for advancing digital equity, the current broadband workforce is ill-equipped to meet required labor demands. In fact, according to the WEF Future of Jobs report, 61% of workers will require retraining by 2027.      Some present-day challenges include:     A tech talent deficit: Unprecedented demand for install and repair techs, combined with low awareness of the potential for broadband careers among the public and in schools.   Outdated education resources: Technical colleges lack modern broadband education resources which leads to student loss and faculty/employer frustration.      We need new methods to reach high-potential candidates and mentoring to create a scalable, locally sourced workforce.      Calix recognizes that developing effective solutions to bridge the skills gap is vital to customer success. Ugh - not good news for the #ucaas ecosystem. Another writedown for Vonage, as the synergies for Ericsson to help carriers sell API-led applications and solutions to enterprises aren't happening, at least fast enough. Actually, this has minimal impact on #ucaas, but the game plan here is based on Vonage having a strong installed base for comms solutions to pave the way #network and #wireless services. Some big announcements this week related to the use of #AI in Telco Mobile Networks. Timing couldn't be better as Spectrum Effect was just this week awarded the patent for the use of AI and Machine Learning Models for classifying interference types in Mobile Operator RAN networks. I have strong conviction on AI's ability to drive more efficient and effective operations of mobility networks and ultimately better outcomes for consumers of the services that mobile networks enable.
