The incredible facility runs on donations and fundraisers and is home to 24 young adults that are handicapped. Our goal is to be able to open a new building that will house 50+ in 3 years. My sister was born with a brain tumor which was removed when she was 16 years old, leaving her severely handicapped for life. She stayed at Independence Village for 1 year and it was a great experience to "get away from Mom and Dad" and actually be a contribution to society, she regained some pride. There are residents who were fine until a car accident or major tragic event occurred when they were young adults. Now they are able to lead "independent lives"... Unfortunately, most government programs overlook these basic needs which are so vital to the pride and peace of our residents and their parents... Imagine if one day, out of the blue, your child is in an accident and handicapped for the rest of their life... it's sad to imagine them at home for all the years to come and it is extremely difficult for parents to work, earn income and take care of a handicapped young adult.
