Generally surprised to not see more hardware vendors in healthcare and life sciences partnering with AI-first companies. When the zone of genius of a company is hardware, it's difficult to imagine that same team achieving parity on an AI product – Apple may be the greatest example of success in this realm, and still has secured many AI capabilities via targeted M&A (Siri, Turi, Xnor.ai, Voysis, Inductiv). Given the importance of leveraged distribution models in the ossified industries of healthcare and life sciences, it seems there is untapped opportunity for more hardware manufacturers to partner and co-develop AI products with startups. Control over the way data is captured and processed is critical for building high quality training data sets, which creates an interesting feedback loop between hardware companies and potential AI-first startup partners. Interested to explore this further with folks in healthcare and life sciences hardware!

Video is a key aspect of an AI-first healthcare ecosystem. There will be a post-AI world soon where the way we interact with technology will fundamentally change. The healthcare ecosystem will evolve to becoming more invisible and assistive, allowing clinicians and patients to interact with each other in a more empathetic way. And technology becomes a true enabler. This will require democratizing access to AI to the healthcare world. And few companies do that as well as Zoom does. Presenting at the Senate as part of the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) "Day on the Hill" wasn't on my 2024 bingo card, but I'm feeling energized by the bipartisan discussions on healthcare AI. The numbers tell a compelling story: while nearly 2,000 healthcare AI startups have received funding over the last two decades, only 1 in 20 provider-facing companies reach late-stage maturity. Beyond natural market dynamics, two critical barriers are holding back AI's full potential in healthcare: unsustainable payment models and inadequate evaluation infrastructure – only 5% of research studies on LLMs in medicine utilize real patient care data, and studies advancing our understanding of performance beyond medical licensing exam benchmarks remain anemic at best. At CHAI, we're advocating for essential foundations: • Rigorous technical model performance evaluations • Comprehensive bias assessments across diverse patient populations • Thorough pre-deployment simulations and prospective studies • Robust ongoing local monitoring The path forward demands strong reporting infrastructure, advanced healthcare AI benchmarks, and meaningful public-private partnerships to drive real-world AI deployment in healthcare. One of the most important concepts we introduced in our recent Healthcare AI roadmap is the notion of “Modality—Business Model—Market fit.” This concept describes how the delivery method and business model of AI in healthcare directly shape its potential to create value. There are many possible combinations of modalities and business models in healthcare. AI can be delivered as software, copilots, agents, services, diagnostics, or therapeutics, supported by business models ranging from usage-based and volumetric pricing to performance-based and shared savings arrangements. Nailing selection of modality and business model is essential for AI companies seeking large market opportunities and profitable operations. As we describe in an example with computer vision-based diabetic retinopathy screening, modality and business model selection can drive a difference in TAM by upwards of 25x, and has serious implications for overall margin structures. As someone who’s been following the AR space closely, I find it exciting to see companies like Snap pushing the boundaries of what smart glasses can do. M13 is thrilled to lead the Series A in RadiantGraph which is focused on personalization in healthcare. As we continue to invest in early stage companies it is abundantly clear that the biggest indicator of success is the founder and his or her ability to execute on their vision of the future. In this case, I don't think I have seen much better founder-market fit than we have with founder and CEO Anmol Madan. We believe in his vision: in order to have the best patient outcomes in healthcare we need increased personalization and AI is the breakthrough to get us there. Anmol started one of the pioneering digital health companies Ginger and then was Chief Data Scientist at Livongo and Teledoc. He has done it all: early stage, late stage, public company. And he deeply understands the nuances of the healthcare market from all angles which is critical for success. While there are many players building healthcare-specific AI capabilities, RadiantGraph is focused on outcomes: The platform is already processing personalization models for more than 3.5 million people, despite launching just last year. Friends/Fellow Founders - TIMELY– As many of you know, I recently visited lawmakers in #Sacramento to speak out against harmful #AI #legislation. This was an incredible experience, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share my story. Thanks to the advocacy of many AI startups, one bad bill was defeated, but another, SB 1047, is headed to the Governor who has not decided whether to let it become law or veto it. #SB1047 would regulate AI in unprecedented ways. Though the bill says it’s about corporate AI giants, I fear small startups will be hit the hardest. Companies like mine will struggle to overcome the new #regulatory hurdles enforced by this reckless #policy. I’m sure everyone agrees AI abuses and misuses should be prevented and prohibited, but SB 1047 would punish businesses that build technology instead of those that misuse it. The government should regulate misuse and harm, not core technology. Please consider joining other #startup and #smallcompany leaders in signing the letter below urging #Governor #Newsom to #veto SB 1047. While there are numerous pros and cons to consider when raising a seed round, I generally agree with Gary Tan’s assessment: companies succeed when they create products that solve problems and meet customer needs, not because of the size of the check VCs write. I understand the frustration for VCs who have been raising larger seed-stage funds and need to deploy more capital per deal, but I support the founder’s decision to limit dilution early on. My advice to founders is to stay strong, be bold, hustle and take a chance on yourself, if you can solve customer problems, the same VCs who are upset about your decision to raise and dilute less during the seed round will come knocking on your door. #startups #founders #dilution #believeinyourself #venturecapital https://lnkd.in/gdmKsUje

Great thoughts for #DigitalHealth and #HealthTech innovators: • ANY disruption to clinician workflows is a significant barrier to adoption. Likewise, interruptions to how executives manage billing, clinician experience, or EHR vendor relationships create immediate headwinds. These operational frictions are where many innovations stumble. • To overcome these barriers, prioritize deep engagement with clinicians, including those less eager to embrace new trends. Their insights can help you anticipate resistance points and design better solutions. • Cultivate an internal champion who is invested in the technology’s success, supported by a “cheerleading team” of stakeholders who can articulate its urgency and impact to administrators. • Once implemented, stay relentlessly focused on delivering the promised value. Regularly seek feedback, demonstrate how the solution improves workflows, and align measurable outcomes with what matters most to clinicians, patients, and executives. Innovation only thrives when it’s designed around the realities of clinical and operational environments. By addressing these headwinds early, health tech innovators can drive adoption and long-term success.

If you’re headed to a home health conference this fall, get ready to hear the word AI about 33,827,324 times. I know, I’m part of the problem! 😛 So I’d like acknowledge where we are in the hype cycle: at its peak. New products launch every day and create tremendous fear of missing out. This is (mostly) good for agencies, because excitement sparks much needed innovation. This is (mostly) good for startups, because folks are eager to try new things. Unfortunately, it’s also a noisy time. Some products will disappoint. Enough bad experiences, and we slide into the trough of disillusionment. How do we avoid this trough? By being clear-eyed in the first place: some products that use AI are already excellent, while others still fall a bit short. Most *will* get better, and some will be absolutely, utterly transformative. We’ll see it all play it out in time.

Nearly half (if not more) of YC's F24 healthcare startups are building AI agent tools for doctors. Using agents to answer phones, write notes, prescreen patient intakes, etc. Sounds great right? Well, not exactly. That's because what YC and other investors are getting wrong about this generation of physicians versus those of the past (who did nothing to stop consolidation or electronic health records), is that they aren't just going to sit around and wait for someone else to build something for them anymore. They're builders who want to solve their own problems, and they're willing and eager to learn. Just look at telemedicine adoption data vs AI to explain what I mean: - Prior to COVID telemedicine was a <19% - During COVID it grew to > 90% - Post COVID it went back down to <40% But AI? - In Jan 24 it was 38% - Latest survey in Oct shows it >68% - By this time next year it should be near 100% This is the fastest adoption of any tech in healthcare in history, and it's only the beginning. Every day, new models, new features, and new tools are created for non-developers to build software using AI. What makes people believe that doctors can't or won't figure out how to use zero shot/few shot prompting in environments like cursor or claude just like everyone else? So if your bet is that AI doctors will make the same purchase decisions as their non-AI counterparts of the past, you're most likely making the wrong bet.
