Marico Limited aims to double the size of its foods portfolio by FY27. Additionally, it anticipates that the domestic revenue share from both its foods and personal care segments will increase from approximately 20 percent to 25 percent within the same timeframe. The foods division witnessed a remarkable 24 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth in value, concluding the year at nearly four times its scale in FY20. The FMCG company also targets "continuous enhancements in profitability" as its various segments, such as Foods and Digital-First, expand and become increasingly significant. The company reported a 5 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase in its consolidated net profit for the March quarter, reaching INR 320 crore. Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB), a bottling company owned by Coca-Cola India , is planning an initial public offering (IPO), banking on the promising growth opportunities in India, as shared by executives familiar with the matter. "The listing plans are currently being discussed internally, and HCCB has begun exploring potential bankers to lay the groundwork for the listing," shared one of the executives. Beverages are outperforming other fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) categories due to their "under-penetration" and affordable price points, according to another source. FMCG giant Marico Limited plans to double its food business by FY27, targeting a growth rate of 20-25% CAGR. To support this goal, the company has signed an MoU with the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) at World Food India 2024, focusing on skill development and technology sharing for its R&D operations. During the WFI Conclave, Vaibhav Bhanchawat, COO of India & Foods Business at Marico, highlighted the company’s recent successes in the food category and its alignment with diversification strategies, particularly through the Plix and True Elements portfolios. Marico also aims to expand its direct reach to over 1.5 million stores in three years via Project SETU, leveraging the distribution strength of its core brands. Bhanchawat noted that while products like Masala Oats already reach over 250,000 outlets, each category will have a tailored marketing approach. Ozempic/ Wegovy “miracle diet drug” users - an emerging opportunity for FMCG? A recent YouGov survey shows that 60.3% of Americans are actively seeking weight loss solutions, propelling the popularity of the latest entrant - Semaglutide. Originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, semaglutide is the drug in brands such Wegovy, Rybelsus, and Ozempic. When Ozempic started trending on TikTok in January 2023, only 35.1% of Americans had ever heard of the drug. But now after a year of media virality, celebrity associations (Elon Musk, Amy Schumer),  and skepticism about safety, more than half (57.9%) of Americans have now heard of semaglutide and (38%) would be willing to give it a shot if prescribed. J.P. Morgan predicts that total GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide 1) users in the U.S. could reach 30 million by 2030, around 9% of the population. Research has it that these weight loss drugs may not only suppress appetites but also lower grocery spending on categories (snacks, soft drinks, high-carb products etc.). FMCG Leaders like Nestlé are combatting this change in eating preferences by announcing Vital Pursuit, a new line of frozen portioned meals targeted at Ozempic/ Wegovy users. GNC plans to add a dedicated section in its 2,300 US stores with vitamins, protein shakes, and supplements tailored to this audience. Denver-based Simply Good Foods seeks to revitalize its low-carb diet brand Atkins in the next 12 to 18 months to meet the rising demand of these drug users. The question arises: How is this audience currently spending on existing offerings of lean cuisines, meal kits, and healthy snacks/beverages? Are these not enough to suffice the needs of Ozempic/ Wegovy users, or is a more targeted product promotional push required?
