As a first PhD out of IST it was a challenge coming off the program choosing a tenured faculty position as a discipline as well as classified nature of advanced research work. Something didn't quite exist. The kind of things we did at IST in the 90-2000s were phenomenal. Two PhDs out of Industrial Engineering brought out two best keyboard (one keyless keyboard) and two decades later I was able to bring Indic Keyboard by setting up Kanaada Phonetics at Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology . Believe me work culture similar to IST. Ergonomics, user testing, unit testing all those classes I had to take came on handy designing customer product for millions. Thank you IEMS, CS, Computer Engg, Mechanical Engg. and Simulation of course. Simulation has advanced quite a bit. Never had imagined then taking so many under grad classes as well as auditing at Industrial engineering and CS even though I worked at IST and had a MS in Mechanical & Aerospace. But happy the program has found its rightful place and continues to bring the best. #uCF #IST #Simulation #modeling

Venkat Tummalapalli and I were lucky enough to visit with one of our favorite customers this week. Team Nesh has been working with IEEE over the 2 years to enhance their #AskIEEE solution. #AskIEEE leverages Nesh’s GenAI capabilities to provide accurate and contextually rich answers to queries of IEEE’s vast library of technical literature in engineering and science. With Nesh fueling #AskIEEE, the organization’s 421,000 members gain streamlined access to the information they need from IEEE’s wealth of scientific content. This week, we met with the IEEE team in Toronto at their Board of Directors Meeting to showcase the benefits of a solution like #AskIEEE. Here are some of my takeaways from our conversations: 1. AskIEEE and Nesh have melded the concern of content distribution behind a paywall with the need for GenAI-powered productivity. 2. AskIEE helps IEEE’s global membership work seamlessly across timelines — enabling them to access the niche-knowledge they need even when other collaborators aren’t online. 3. And as always — GenAI enthusiasm continues. Companies and organizations should focus on meeting this enthusiasm from their members and employees. Start with defining a narrow use cases that can scale once proven. 0059: Mapping Molecular Hamiltonians To Qubit Operators with Jordan-Wigner Transformation In quantum computing, the efficient mapping of molecular Hamiltonians to qubit operators is a critical step in solving electronic structure problems, especially in quantum chemistry. One of the most established methods for achieving this is the Jordan-Wigner Transformation (JWT). The JWT translates fermionic operators, which describe the behavior of electrons in molecules, into qubit operators that can be used in quantum algorithms. The central challenge in electronic structure calculations is the fermionic nature of electrons, which obey the Pauli exclusion principle and anti-commutation relations. Fermionic operators are used to create and annihilate electrons in specific quantum states, but these operators do not directly translate to qubit-based quantum computing. This is where JWT comes in: it provides a systematic way to represent these fermionic operators as qubit operators that obey the commutation relations of quantum gates. The Jordan-Wigner Transformation maps each fermionic operator to a string of Pauli matrices on qubits. Specifically, each fermionic creation or annihilation operator is mapped to a combination of Pauli-Z, Pauli-X, and Pauli-Y operators that span the qubits, ensuring that the anti-commutation properties of fermions are preserved in the qubit space. By mapping molecular Hamiltonians using the Jordan-Wigner Transformation, we can represent the electronic interactions and energy of a molecule in a form that quantum computers can process. Once this mapping is complete, variational algorithms like the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) or Quantum Phase Estimation (QPE) can be employed to estimate the ground-state energy of the molecule. These algorithms aim to find the eigenvalues of the molecular Hamiltonian, which directly correspond to the molecular energy levels. The benefit of using JWT is that it scales linearly with the number of qubits, making it an efficient method for near-term quantum devices. However, it has some limitations, such as the need for long-range qubit interactions, which may pose a challenge for hardware implementations. Other transformations, like the Bravyi-Kitaev Transformation, offer alternatives with different trade-offs in qubit connectivity and operator complexity. The Jordan-Wigner Transformation is foundational in quantum chemistry simulations on quantum computers. It bridges the gap between the fermionic nature of molecules and the qubit-based framework of quantum computing. As the field progresses, leveraging such transformations is essential for advancing quantum simulations of complex molecular systems, which could lead to breakthroughs in fields like drug discovery, material science, and energy research.
