🤔 How many times have you reinvented the wheel in Tableau?   I thought the radial jittering in my IronViz qualifier was pretty cool.   But it looks like my IronViz mentor, Samuel Parsons, had done the same thing 5 years prior.   At least I settled on the same chart name as he did, so that's what it is - a radial jitter.   These are good for infographics showing a distribution that concentrates around a central point.   📝 In the near future, I hope to make a simple dashboard showing three variations of this chart type, including evenly distributed dots as well as dots on the periphery.   In this #makeovermonday case, I thought the idea of concentrated dots meshed well with firearms - I got the idea from seeing the bee swarms by Shangruff Raina and Sherzodbek I.   Anyhow, I adjusted the worksheet size so that the output is slightly elliptical to fit well in the target image.   ⚖️ I thought I'd go down the route of comparison to domestic purchases because I knew those numbers were high. 🧰 There are some standard practices you should have in your toolbox when working in Tableau.   ✔️ For example, of you are going to perform major surgery on a sheet, duplicate it first.   ✔️Likewise for calculated fields.   🔒 Do this because you want to keep a working copy around. Yes, you can back up the entire workbook, but you may have other changes in there that you want to keep.   🪙 Anyhow…   🔧 Another tool in the toolbox is brute force filter removal.   💾 For this, you want to save your workbook first because you are going to discard your changes after you're done with this one, and I'll explain why at the end.   🔎 Many times in analytics, your actual problem is one of filtering. If you suspect this to be the case, then read on.   📷 The image shows the number of filters I had on this sheet. Yes, it's a lot.   🌎 If you operate in the world of healthcare data and have convinced users to have 3 or fewer filters, by all means, enlighten me in the comments as to how to achieve that.   🧙 So, my Viz-in-Tooltip was returning no results (bonus tip: I put "VIT" in the worksheet name of all such sheets) . After A TON of fooling with filter parameters and online searches and videos, I finally channeled my inner virtual manager, Sandy. The real Sandy is quite amazing - she is both wise and powerful (to borrow an LOTR quote - but otherwise, she is unlike Saruman…), but she was out of the office at the time.   🔮 Inner Sandy told me to remove the filters one at a time until my data reappeared. (IRL Sandy had advised me to do this on a prior occasion).   🏆 This indeed revealed what the problem was. I was falsely assuming that two of the filters had no negative effects. (What did I post about assumptions and bugs?)   📝 The reason that I then just discarded changes is that because removing some filters (like those for All sheets using the data source) screws up all your other sheets. It's easier to just hack away, discard, and reopen. 🤔  Did you know you can have separate legends for each measure in a Tableau table?   🙈 But, you probably don't want EVERY metric to be colored; that would be an eyesore.   For the majority of the legends, you can basically turn it off by: ✔️ Selecting Palette: Custom Diverging ✔️ Selecting white for both end points ✔️ Check Stepped Color and selecting a value of 2.   💭 I would be nice if Tableau had a way to do that in one step.   It would also be nice if Tableau had a row-banding option within separate legends.   🏗→🧠 Build to Learn!   💭🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ Follow for more.   #tableau #data #analytics #VizoftheRay

⚖️ Have you ever wanted to have mark sizes be consistent across worksheets.   ❌ But you're not snapping to those convenient 50% lines.   ❌ And you lack privileges to edit on server?   🔨 Well, this was covered briefly in Tableau Conference, and I made an example dashboard - showing sizing with a parameter.   🤔 But you say, "Hmm. I want consistent sizing but I want it by a measure across worksheets."   I have an example for that too. Link in comments.   Of course, you typically wouldn't display this parameter for the user to control, but who knows? ❓ Did you know that Tableau's character sort is case-insensitive?   ⚖️ That means that it treats capital letters and lowercase letters as the same.   👍 That's probably a good thing and a useful default.   😀 The (somewhat funny) problem that I ran into is that has my RDBMS (Teradata) has case-sensitive sorting.   📃Capital letters sort first, lower case letters later.   ❌ I was testing my dashboard with some queries against the source data and many of my metrics were off for the first row.   🔍 In the Teradata tool, the text fields were also being truncated for display as in the "Output" section of the image.   👁️ So initially, I couldn't see the sort disparity.   👍Once I saw it, I wrapped my ORDER BY with an UPPER(variable), which eased the comparison, and everything was fine.   📝 Sometimes it's the little things (assumptions) that cause problems.   🏗→🧠 Build to Learn!   💭🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️ Follow for more.   #data #datascience #analytics #VizoftheRay

Timing has a lot to play in things succeeding in life. In this Tableau #viz, getting the underlying data and dashboard ready, with a relatively short deadline has been a challenge. Not to mention with any public viz, knowing when to stop creating 'one more viz!' James 'Jimmy' Anderson is one of England, and arguably cricket's greatest bowlers. ball His retirement from the international game came at the end of England's recent win against the West Indies. 🏏 Publishing this dashboard following his retirement, meant a somewhat enforced personal deadline to complete, not to mention delivering before the English football team play in the Euro finals ⚽... The key ball-by-ball data source from the incredible CricSheet also not yet available for the last game, so a manual data collation to complete summary detail. This dashboard uses a range of different visuals to guide you through his career, using different #visualisations These visuals range from a simple bar and time series charts, to some experimental visuals ('Tree Ring' and 'Magic Eye' and the Digital Scorecard) that these passion projects lend themselves to. 📝 Here is a Tiny Tableau Tip for Tuesday regarding workflow.   📃 If you are going to make a verbose entry in a tooltip with lots of editing, do it in a word processor and then paste it to your tip.   ❓ Why?   ⚠ If you accidentally hit Esc or the close X while editing a tooltip, Tableau simply discards all your changes.   😲 No prompt. ❓ Do you use view data frequently?   There are definitely features in Tableau that I have underutilized traditionally.   View Data was one of them.   I wasted time going to the data source tab or the source database when I could have viewed the data from, well, the "View Data" button.   The Summary Card is a function that I continue to tend to completely forget.   I would list others, but to be honest, I'm not sure what they are   ... because I'm forgetting them. 🤣🤣🤣   ❓ How about you? A big focus in the data world is on data literacy, and ensuring that anyone in an organization has a basic level of understanding and can use data effectively. This led me to check on regular literacy in the US. I was frankly shocked by some of the statistics: ✅ Illiteracy has become such a serious problem in our country that 130 million adults are now unable to read a simple story to their children ✅ 45 million are functionally illiterate and read below a 5th grade level ✅ Between 46% and 51% of American adults have an income well below the poverty level because of their inability to read ✅ Illiteracy costs American taxpayers an estimated $20 billion each year There are quite a few other statistics, and I've included them in the link below. The implications of low literacy (or complete illiteracy) has very negative consequences for those individuals, our economy, healthcare, etc. We've come a long way as a country when it comes to literacy, but there is still room for improvement and we should be focusing more of our education efforts on basic literacy. https://lnkd.in/gCURvMSf

🤔 Have you noticed that when you select marks in a Tableau view, your reference lines recalculate if they are not constants?   😲 It's actually an optional feature!   ⌛ I have to admit, if this was mentioned in my initial training, I missed it… for quite a while.   Then I rediscovered it.   You can find it at the bottom of the Edit Reference Line form.   Just uncheck "Show recalculated line for highlighted or selected data points"   (I'm curious why they used "data points" instead of "marks"?)   🙈 I tend to have a bit of situational blindness, so if I'm not actively looking for something, I easily overlook it, and that's why I forgot about that checkbox.   Anyway, while I'm not a frequent user of reference lines, when I do use them, I usually prefer that they don’t recalculate.   How about you?
