I think the adage "you don't truly know someone until you live with them," applies equally to businesses. Observing how companies react to market depressions and significant societal changes offers a similar revelation in my opinion. Since 2020, the progression from a period of "listening and learning" to one of accountability, and now to questioning the extent of engagement with social issues, has been fascinating to watch from a broader marketing perspective. This evolution is especially intriguing from my standpoint, where my professional obligations span both fiduciary duties to customers and financial stakeholders. Year over year, the Edelman Trust Barometer indicates that people trust businesses more than NGOs, governments, and media. This established trust positions commemorative months as pivotal times for B2C marketers to make a significant statement through campaigns and CSR initiatives. Despite resistance in 2024, it’s essential for brands to recognize that consumers, particularly Gen Z and millennials — who will represent 48% of global retail spending by 2030 — retain long memories. I believe that brands that choose to support a cause must genuinely commit to their stance to maintain authenticity with these discerning consumers. Dogs and marketing operations people may seem like an odd pairing, but let's see where the comparison takes us: 🐶Loyalty: Dogs are known for their unwavering loyalty to their owners, and similarly, marketing operations people are often fiercely loyal to their team or company. They work diligently to support the marketing efforts and ensure the success of campaigns. 🦴Adaptability: Dogs are known for their adaptability to different situations and environments. Similarly, marketing operations professionals must be adaptable to the ever-changing landscape of marketing technologies, strategies, and consumer behaviors. 🐾Attention to Detail: Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and are often used in tasks that require attention to detail, like search and rescue missions or bomb detection. Similarly, marketing operations people must pay close attention to detail when managing data, analyzing metrics, and ensuring campaigns run smoothly. 🦴Team Players: Dogs are social animals and often work well in teams, whether it's with other dogs or with humans. Want to know a good way to encourage/force your company to support and champion your brand campaign? Custom Slack emojis. Will the customer ever see them? Probably not, but who cares. Half the battle is internal alignment, excitement, and keeping the spirit of the campaign alive. I'm a big believer in momentum > moments. For “Now You Know,” we created some seemingly random but campaign-specific gems: the grandfluencer, the foam finger, sparkling crystal ball, the tagline, the hashtag #ydkwydk. We just had fun with it. Shameless tip: whenever you post in Slack about the campaign, make sure to react to your own post with every single emoji (subtlety is overrated!!)

Heyo LinkedIn,  You can probably guess why I’m here - linking in with old pals, schmoozing with big wigs, even changed my last name to match the site (oh wait, that was more of a patriarchy/tradition thing, scratch that). I’m looking for the next place to bring my pizzazz, my ebullient leadership style, my virtuosic way with content strategy, my sesquipedelicious copywriting. But I don’t have a clue why my resume isn’t pinging the gatekeeping robots to hand me off to a recruiter stat! Only kidding, I’m using my own robots to match my resume with job descriptions (thanks, Teal It’s just rough out there for job seekers - and recruiters alike I’m sure, what with the floods of resumes flowing these days. Anyhoozle, I took some time mostly off to welcome our little Marigold into the world (she’s a perfect ball of pure joy - just like her sister) and now I’m ready to make my next big move. So here I am hat-in-hand (it’s spring now, so I’ve recently swapped my beanie for my wide-brimmed gardening hat) asking if anyone knows anyone who needs a goofball like me on their team. Oh, I meant an experienced project manager, who is always brimming with creative ideas, has a knack for using data to drive decision making and is an empathetic team leader, but doesn’t like to brag. I’ve been in the digital marketing game for over 10 years - so I can set a content strategy and copywrite for max conversion with my eyes closed, although I typically do work with my eyes open. But, I am looking at my next move in a more world-is-my-oyster sort of way. I’d love to lean into my love of leading teams, managing complex projects and being a genuine help to other people - to put my softer skills to work at a place that is a good fit for me (and me for them). I’m exploring both marketing and customer success roles, at the moment. I’m looking to land in a high-growth environment full of smart people, and I do still plan to bring my creativity and love of writing with me. More than any certain job title, I’m craving the growth that comes from stretching to do your very best work yet, and striving to match the immense talent around you (not me getting wistful for the Photojojo heyday and the sweet-as-pie smarty-pantses I worked with there). So, if you’ve read this far - you’re so cool - please let me know if you can think of a place that could use a Laurel on their team, or if you just want to commiserate about job searching, or if you want any tomato plants (we have over 150 of them under lights in our living room and at least 120 of them need new homes come late-May). Let’s talk about a fun topic: Money 🥵 Oftentimes I’m watching other founders do big, bold things like launch in Whole Foods across the US, create a new product line, or completely overhaul their brand to give it a glow up. My first thought is usually “Holy crap, that’s AMAZING” because I know just how hard these things are to accomplish behind the scenes, but my next thought is always, “How are they paying for this??” My guiding principle for Balloon 🎈has always been bootstrapping. I’m very protective of retaining my control (see also: my post about being a solopreneur vs. co-founder) and would rather build slowly even if it means missing out on some big swings. I launched the business using a pool of money I had made from freelance marketing over the past 5 years; my husband and I agreed we would keep our FT salaries for family and house expenses. I started out with $23K, and spent: ~$12K in R&D ~ $5K on cans, ingredients, boxes and swag ~ $3K on my first production run I’ve made about $12K back in sales and have kept freelancing in my spare time (lol), so I am about where I started, money wise. However, I have some big hairy goals for the future: - R&D for three new flavors 🤗 - Packaging for getting into retail 📦 - Scaling up production with a much bigger co-manufacturer (this would facilitate/necessitate me storing the cans somewhere other than my basement, introducing additional warehousing costs 😅) So far I’ve been okay tracking expenses and profits in a spreadsheet, but retail/distributor math is probably going to throw a wrench into that approach. I’m all ears on calculators/simple ways to understand wholesale costs vs. profits!

AITA? My network is super important to me. I have never been the kind of LI user that connects with anyone who asks, so you can trust that I know who the people in my network are. (maybe haven't talked to a bunch of them in far too long, but that's a different story...) So if you want to connect with me, a blank connection is getting rejected without a second thought. I'll at least read, but probably reject, notes like "Hey, we both work in Marketing. Let's connect!" or "I noticed you live on Earth. Me too! Let's connect." What does work? Let's connect. - I'm trying to learn more about (topic) and noticed (reference to something I wrote). Can we connect so I can learn more. I'm not trying to be elitist with a "policy" like this. I'm trying to make sure my network is valuable to me and other people in my network. If I don't know you, then we're just "LinkedIn members who both clicked the connect button," which isn't all that valuable.

As an ops leader, have you ever had a brilliant idea, figured it wasn’t a big deal needing to be sold in, introduced it, and…total failure? It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me. 🙋🏽‍♂️ Change is a constant in agency operations, but for it to truly succeed, it needs to be consultative. I’ve made this mistake with “just a small change” one too many times. The result is that people are either A) surprised 😯, B) shocked 🤯, C) irritated 😠, or D) actively against it 😒. As ops leaders, we often think we know what's required and implement changes accordingly. But if these changes don't resonate with those who need to carry them out, or if they feel they didn't have a say, The Magical New Thing is likely to fall flat. When we skip consultation, we risk resistance, low morale, and ultimately, failure to achieve our goals. The key is to involve your team from the outset. Here are a few lessons I've learned: 👂 Listen Actively: Before making any changes, gather input from your team. Their experiences provide valuable insights that you might overlook. 🗣️ Communicate Clearly: Explain why the change is necessary and how it will benefit not just the company, but also the team members. 📚 Provide Training and Support: Ensure everyone feels equipped to embrace the change. Offer training sessions, resources, and ongoing support. 🔄 Iterate and Improve: Treat the change process as iterative. Collect feedback continuously and be ready to make adjustments based on what's working and what's not. Change is a journey, not a destination. ✨ First 90 days in a new internal comms role (or looking for a reset/refresh)? ✨ Here's a solid framework for a 30/60/90-day plan. Also! You can obviously use this for your first 90 days in a new job, but it's an amaaaaazing thing to bring to interviews (it's incredibly impressive) and/or a really good option for what I like to call a "hard reset" -- when enough things have changed in your org that you just need to call it all into question and start fresh. The first 30 days: ☑ Share your 30/60/ 90 day plan (seriously! it helps) ☑ Understand the company’s current goals, priorities, & values ☑ Run an internal communications survey ☑ Start a listening tour (formal + informal!) ☑ Review the current toolset & processes ☑ Identify quick little wins: just a few things that can make an almost instantaneous impact The first 60 days: ☑ Complete an internal communications audit ☑ Determine key metrics and set benchmarks ☑ Create an editorial calendar with holidays, observances, and important company dates ☑ Set up monthly touchpoints with key stakeholders (HR, IT, marketing, + leadership for starters) ☑ Achieve and showcase those little wins! The first 90 days: ☑ Document your internal communications strategy ☑ Publish a monthly report with all your KPIs ☑ Evaluate new tools (esp. for email if you're using Outlook or a marketing tool) ☑ Advocate for resources (budget, team, etc.) ☑ Launch or revamp a few core internal communication campaigns (I typically recommend a monthly newsletter, all-hands recap, and weekly CEO letter) ...anything I'm missing that you'd recommend I include? For years, I've had a “love-hate relationship” with the word "campaign." Too often, it's synonymous with short-term thinking—setting up the expectation of quick wins that rarely materialize. The reality is, relying on one-off campaigns can lead to a vicious cycle of launching, failing, and rushing into the next effort without truly understanding the why behind the results. This approach is increasingly ineffective as the channels and methods to reach our audiences become more diverse.
