“Michelle is the quintessential professor who gently and brilliantly guides her students with kindness, class, and wisdom, while drawing out each individual's strong and unique qualities. It's impossible not to be riveted while Michelle teaches. She is endlessly experienced, engaging, and completely inclusive and respectful of every human being. Michelle's mentorship is subtle, as she cleverly steers others to develop their own awareness and self-mastery. Her words of wisdom, her warmth, and her laugh are forever etched in my heart and mind. ”

You've received negative feedback. How can you transform it into a stepping stone for growth?
That negative feedback probably stings! “Where’s the first aid kit?” First, AID - assess, identify and deploy. ASSESS the situation. Each person has a perspective, and understanding how the other(s) person(people) might view the situation provides a better 360 assessment of the situation. Removing yourself from the middle of the situation to an observer helps depersonalize the feedback and broaden the view. IDENTIFY what needs to be addressed and how you wish to respond so that you are acknowledging the feedback and providing a proactive response, versus one that is reactive. Deploy your plan. Then repeat as necessary. First AID can reduce the “sting” and bring about the healing to a more empowered and positive leadership perspective.

Here's how you can captivate virtual audiences with your presentation techniques.
At times, despite all the practice, something inevitably goes wrong. That is OK. Only you know what is next and what was going to happen. So, remain calm, and move forward with Plan B or Plan C without a long description about what was going to happen.

Here's how you can captivate virtual audiences with your presentation techniques.
Seeing your contributions populate the screen lends a sense of engagement that can enhance learning and sense of belonging during an online presentation. I have used Mentimeter to do just that. Often, as a culminating activity to the presentation or at a pivotal moment, I will ask each participant to provide 1-3 words that resonate with them about the material, and I share the word cloud that is generated on screen for all to see what is created. A second interactive tool that enhances learning and participation is Mural. This online whiteboard can capture so much from an individual who wishes to create a board to memorialize their thoughts and learning, while also providing a place for small groups to capture their ideas.

Here's how you can captivate virtual audiences with your presentation techniques.
Set the tone from the moment your audience enters the "room"! Do you want to create a lively environment for the presentation, what does your virtual background look like? Do you have music playing in the background? Are you posing a question on the screen or in chat to invite people into the conversation? If it is a more professional and reserved tone, how might you still engage others from the beginning? Share that they are invited to unmute or place their comments/questions in the chat box. And, lastly, your energy and enthusiasm is contagious. However, you have to bring a bit more than usual so that it comes across the screen as you want to be received.
