Discussions have been underway since February 2024, but no agreement has been reached. The core issue is payment rates: Baptist Health seeks increases to cover rising costs, arguing that current rates are below market, while Florida Blue contends that these demands are excessive and significantly above inflation. With the potential for Baptist Health services to become out-of-network for Florida Blue members on October 1, many patients in Northeast Florida are left uncertain about their healthcare options. Florida Blue faces a September 30 deadline to reach agreements with Baptist Health in Jacksonville and Naples Comprehensive Health (NCH) in Southwest Florida. Both health systems argue Florida Blue underpays them compared to other providers, leading to contentious negotiations. If agreements aren’t reached, tens of thousands of patients could face higher out-of-pocket costs if the hospitals fall out of the insurer’s network. Baptist Health seeks a 60% rate increase over five years, while NCH requests equitable reimbursement. Florida Blue claims these demands would raise premiums for members, offering smaller increases tied to the medical inflation rate of 3.26%. Despite daily negotiations, both sides remain far apart. Florida Blue insists its current reimbursement offers are competitive and exceed inflation. If no deal is reached, Baptist Health’s hospitals and NCH’s two hospitals, outpatient facilities, and physician groups will no longer be covered by Florida Blue, potentially disrupting healthcare access for many residents.
