DOE proposes ten “national interest” transmission corridors (my latest for PV Magazine USA) Eight of the ten transmission corridors proposed by the U.S. Department of Energy would facilitate transmission between grid regions; one would expand transmission within the Mid-Atlantic’s #PJM grid region; and one would expand transmission in the Northern Plains.

"Utilities have for decades “been using the same playbooks to build centralized generation and associated transmission and distribution to meet long-term demand needs. And it’s largely worked,” Shah said. “But with demand growth accelerating from data centers, new manufacturing, a surge of electric vehicles and electrified appliances ... an old grid operations paradigm needs to be updated.” After roughly two decades of stagnant electricity demand, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. now forecasts an approximately 15% to 20% increase in electricity consumption over the next decade, DOE noted in its brief. And by 2050, demand could double to meet net-zero emissions targets. Importantly, this demand growth is not unprecedented, according to Louise White, a senior consultant with the DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions and Loan Programs Office. Climate change is posing an unprecedented threat to power systems worldwide, with increasing extreme weather events causing widespread disruptions and highlighting the urgent need for enhancing grid resilience. Although this is a global issue, least developed countries (LDCs) and Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) have a greater degree of vulnerability and fewer resources to prevent, withstand, and recover from the impacts of these events. At the core of the issue is the vulnerability of power systems to these extreme weather events, which cause severe damage to power infrastructure and often lead to power outages. The power system is an interconnected network and the failure of one component can have cascading effects and lead to extensive outages. Furthermore, the vulnerabilities of the power sector have cascading effects on critical infrastructure such as communication, health and other emergency services. If you are a contractor, workforce development agency, or otherwise involved in the energy efficiency and electrification ecosystem - we need your help! The group has developed a short survey aimed at assessing how prepared contractors and other stakeholders in this industry feel to support the forthcoming programs funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and other clean energy initiatives. As state regulators and utilities themselves announce renewable energy goals, often more questions are raised than are answered, at least initially. For starters, what will the mix of renewables look like, particularly utility-scale vs local or customer-based energy sources (typically called distributed energy resources, or DERs)? And what is the best way to balance these two very different approaches to delivering renewable energy? Looking at utility-scale renewables, there is an argument to be made that economies of scale make this the go-to for rolling out renewables at a large scale. Industry analysts are forecasting a massive growth of utility-scale renewables. One source, Canary Media, reports that U.S. has nearly 160 gigawatts of installed solar capacity, more than half of which is utility-scale. More than double that amount of new solar — 358 gigawatts — is forecast to be installed in the U.S. by the end of 2030.
