The university is known for its men's basketball team, which has appeared in 13 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournaments after making it to the final of the 1989 tournament and losing 80–79 in overtime to the Michigan Wolverines. The resulting increase in national television exposure has led to increasing numbers of applications from prospective students.

In collaboration with Lowenstein Sandler's Center for the Public Interest, Rutgers University Camden – School of Law, and the New Jersey Innocence Project, Michael volunteered to represent New Jersey residents who have been wrongfully convicted of crimes and seek exoneration.

Since 1989, 3,284 individuals have been exonerated in the United States, having collectively lost nearly 30,000 years of their lives incarcerated for crimes that they did not commit. Only 39 of those exonerations have involved New Jersey convictions. Studies estimate that between 1 percent and 6 percent of all criminal cases result in wrongful convictions. Using the conservative estimate of 1 percent, hundreds of innocent individuals remain incarcerated in New Jersey.

To address this injustice, Rutgers University joined the National Innocence Network in 2021 and received hundreds of requests from incarcerated individuals claiming innocence. More than two dozen Lowenstein attorneys, such as Michael, stepped up to assist the New Jersey Innocence Project with reviewing and investigating the innocence claims to identify appropriate cases for potential exoneration and continues to investigate claims and help innocent people return to their homes and communities.

Michael assisted Professor McLaughlin with researching and writing portions of this text, which is designed for use in law school courses on Civil Procedure. This casebook begins with a comprehensive overview, followed by in-depth topical coverage. Its extensive textual discussion—along with the cases, notes, questions, and problems— helps students develop rapid comprehension of the subject. The problems throughout the casebook present students with the opportunity to apply the legal rules and policies studied in the previous materials in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts. This innovative approach provides both efficient and effective coverage of all the major areas of civil procedure, even in courses with reduced hours of credit. The 2008 second edition fully incorporates the new "re-styled" Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the latest "e-discovery" amendments, and the most recent decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court, including Grable, Exxon Mobil, and Bell Atlantic.

While at ADP, Michael volunteered to lead a wide-ranging project across ADP's global legal organization. To refine its customer service, ADP uses Net Promotor Scoring, or NPS, which is a customer loyalty metric that measures customers’ willingness to not only return for another purchase or service but also make a recommendation to their family, friends or colleagues.

In an effort to enhance the level of professional service provided by the Legal Department to the Business, ADP sought to utilize its NPS analysis internally instead of only externally, with the goal of gauging the level or service Legal provides to the Business.

After receiving initial scores well-below expected benchmarks, Michael was asked to join a new committee created to investigate the friction points causing such low scores; brainstorm ideas, trainings, and presentations to correct those problems; and strategize a plan to reach continuous score improvements year after year.

Through his work on ADP's unique NPS project, Michael was able to work with attorneys across all of ADP's global footprint, and often had the opportunity to regularly present pertinent updates and progress report to ADP's most senior executives.

This cross-business unit project helped Michael understand and navigate the complexities of implementing real change in such a large organization, and afforded him valuable problem-solving, communication, and presentation skills that continue to benefit Michael to this day.

Given his team's dedicated efforts, the next annual NPS scores received were significantly higher - meeting and exceeding our original goal. Getting to manage such a large scale project and work across multiple business units was in important learning experience that has benefited Michael ever since.

Michael was honored to be recognized by ALM and Law.com as Mentor of the Year during the 2022 NJ Legal Awards. Per the nomination page: “It takes talent and determination to become an excellent practitioner, but teaching others is a talent unto itself. Good mentors can take those around them to the next level, whether through formal mentorship programs or simply serving as good leaders and guides.”

Further, Law.com interviewed Michael on how being mentored, and mentoring others, has positively impacted his career. “The role of a mentor is something you surely set out to take, and doing so produces rewards more than one can imagine,” says Gordon, who is being honored by the New Jersey Legal Awards for his contributions as a Mentor and Advisor at Seton Hall, where he mentors countless undergraduate and law students, and serves as the Founder of its Minority Pre-Law Organization. “Having such a strong mentor [as Professor Denis McLaughlin from Seton Hall Law School] helped me realize the value of mentorship and instilled in me the passion to give back and pay it forward. I knew there were so many students just like me who may have been interested in the law, but who had no idea how to start along the right path, how to excel in law school, and how to be the best attorney one can be.” He adds: “It all makes it worthwhile when, years later, my students still stay in touch and keep me abreast of their lives, both personally and professionally.”
