Despite the potential for year-round economic benefits touted by Sam Gerrity, CEO of Saratoga, who emphasizes the project's capacity to enhance local infrastructure and economy, "The Coney" faces stiff competition. It is one of approximately ten proposals across New York City vying for one of three coveted casino licenses to be issued by the state in 2025, with rivals located in strategic areas like Midtown Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens. The development team has been proactive in community engagement, employing strategies such as hiring former local council members and sponsoring community initiatives like youth sports. However, a report by the borough president in July indicated a prevailing skepticism among Brooklyn residents concerning the casino, with many opposing the idea.
