I’m going to nerd out a little bit today and give some insight into what goes through my mind when I review a new client’s previously filed tax return. 💰 First, I examine their method of accounting: is it cash or accrual? For contractors, I also check their long-term contract method. Sometimes, the box is checked for a particular method, but upon reviewing their balance sheet and M-1/M-3, I find they are not using the claimed method. Issue one identified. 💰 Second, I look at the tax return type (1065, 1120S, 1120). Does this return type meet their goals? This is often overlooked. Time and again, I see new clients who have been with their previous CPA for decades, but their CPA never evaluated whether the tax return type still aligns with their goals. Issue two identified. There are many more details I could delve into, but this is what I do with every new client and when I review tax returns before issuing them. I solve problems for clients that they didn’t know they had. That’s what I enjoy about being in public accounting! #CPA #Accounting #Taxes #Tax #Taxplanning #Frost #Accountingrules
