Generative AI tools, such as Open AI’s #ChatGPT or Dall-e, have been the subject of much discussion in the last year. This Winter Session course from TC Academy at Teachers College with Mario Khreiche prepares educators to integrate this urgent issue into their curriculum, and to prepare students for a changing AI landscape in education, policy, and industry. https://lnkd.in/efyywSuK

Among the most interesting findings is where district leaders want to apply AI if they have the necessary funding. Currently, 12% report using the technology to analyze assessment data and 10% to identify students in need of intervention. With more funding available, however, the number of district leaders that would apply AI to strengthen how assessment data is analyzed is nearly quadrupled. Gen AI-induced disruption is accelerating across higher education, as students explore ready access to tools that frequently undermine the learning process. How can universities re-establish their control of the teaching and learning journey? This discussion paper goes a long way toward providing a roadmap for university leaders who are looking for positive steps to take to manage an increasingly chaotic landscape.

When it comes to the impact of #generativeai on #education, it is clear that we are all in this together. That's part of what will make the discussions at #EDTECHWeek so important -- educators, researchers, innovators, policy and advocacy experts, funders and market shapers all under one roof to discuss (and maybe argue about) the purposes of education, what tools are needed by whom and to accomplish what, and how to prioritize safety, accountability, fairness and efficacy (the SAFE framework) through effective collaboration between education, government, and industry. This past spring I was invited to participate in the Center on Reinventing Public Education's AI Learning Forum. AI raises a host of questions and issues for all of us - in K12 and higher education, some good some not so much. Readers of my blog will know that I have spent quite a lot of my time and energy on these issues over the past couple of years. I really enjoyed meeting and spending a couple of days, at this forum, with a bunch of smart people, learning and talking, exploring the possibilities, challenges of generative AI. CRPE has taken these conversations and crafted a report title: Wicked Opportunities: Leveraging AI to Transform Education. The report takes a balanced view on how AI can address “wicked problems” like achievement gaps and teacher shortages, but not shying away from the challenges that of  bridging existing disparities and aligning edtech developments with student needs. In brief, the report recommends: Convene and connect cross-sector leaders to strengthen AI literacy in support of education. Seed a national education leadership strategy. Focus on the “art of the possible” to spread powerful ideas for transforming education in the age of AI. Catalyze investment in research and development for early-stage AI adoptions, innovations, and collaborations. More thoughts on #efficiency in #highered. We’re approaching structural issues now. Work will change to meet student demand, starting with #faculty. These are tough conversations, but necessary ones as institutions seek to remain viable in the face of declining enrollment. Institutions will need #courage and #leadership from many seats to accomplish this aim.

When business schools starting taking a lot of public backlash about ethics curriculum in light of corporate failures a la Enron, many schools took the moment as an opportunity to more deeply infuse ethics training into the curriculum. Ethics became not just a standalone course, but part of case studies in leadership, finance, marketing, strategy -- the full spectrum of the curriculum was updated to reflect the inescapable notion that ethical issues exist in many dimensions. Given the difficulty in moving the needle on climate, I'm hopeful we'll see a similar curricular movement around the impact of climate change not only in the grad business curricula, but in grad curricula overall, something that creates critical thinking frameworks around how graduates are to best navigate a rapidly changing world. We're all aware of the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) acronym used to describe the world of the future, but I don't think we've reckoned, yet, with how challenging the near future is likely to be given the pace and magnitude of change in the climate and the way it will cause suffering in new ways. I know everyone has seen these kinds of articles and knows that climate change is important, but if you have a few moments to check this one out, I wonder if you'll come away with ideas on what we can do in grad curricula to prepare students to navigate the future. Should *every* grad program have an outcome oriented around the future wrought by a changing climate, or just some programs? Which ones?

As the higher education sector enters a new era of fiscal challenges, without acting strategically, nimbly and timely, consolidation or closure for many may be inevitable. University presidents comprise a critical role in dictating the future of the sector; many decisions will be necessary, which have outsized implications on the constituents of the institutions they lead. The most deliberate, intentional, open-minded, mission-focused and prepared presidents will lead their institutions to a more seamless integration, ensuring mission continuity, institutional sustainability and improved outcomes for all parties. These decisions will have ramifications that will reverberate across higher education for generations.
