It’s #DataViz #SuperBowl season. If you see me posting images of Rick Klein or Steve Kornecki- know I’m not pushing electoral discussion- but I’m #nerding out on mainstream #news data visuals on dashboards. This is a side of me I have to surpress on social media because it gets political REAL FAST in the comments- but I just want to talk about the COMMENTARY and Live stats PRESENTATION y’all! And the maps!!! #datacommunicator True story, when drafting and pitching my #datacommunicator role profile / job description research- I had to make an extremely advanced version as well as a very basic draft of the position before our internal review folks understood what I was talking about. The extremely advanced version was for public speakers on the news like Steve Kornecki, who has gone on to do live data viz presentations at other events like the Kentucky Derby. It’s why I remain patient to see what will come from #VR and #AR layering, as promise has been shown to get to a future Hans Rosling would “squee!” about as #tech and #datascience evolves. #nerdalert Anyone else this data viz nerdy?

I’m excited to share a new Tableau visualization exploring an alternative Electoral College approach, used by Maine since 1972 and Nebraska since 1992. This method awards two electoral votes to the state-wide winner and the rest to winners of each Congressional District. The visualization examines how the 2020 election results might have changed with this method, applying the Congressional Districts used in the 2024 election. By moving from a winner-takes-all system to a more regionally representative model, we can see how different parts of the country could influence election outcomes. One advantage of this system is that it gives more value to every vote, regardless of whether a state is considered a swing state. Voters in often-overlooked districts could have more impact, potentially increasing national voter engagement and making the election process feel more representative of local populations. However, this approach could also increase gerrymandering, where district lines are manipulated to favor one party, leading to skewed results. Additionally, it might result in more fragmented and complex election outcomes, making it harder to achieve a clear victory. In the 2020 election, Joe Biden won 306 electoral votes, narrowly capturing key swing states like Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin. Under this method, Biden’s total would have dropped to 279, making the race much closer. This highlights how applying the district-based approach could have led to a more evenly distributed electoral vote outcome. This visualization aims to spark discussion on reforming the Electoral College to enhance its fairness. Data Analysis — ROI of DEI topic got 48 votes out of 106  Does this mean DEI consultants love data but hate analysis? Please don't hate me for asking this question. However, I have seen that DEI consultants  distance themselves from data analysis It can look scary from the outside. However, like any process, if you follow the steps  it can be easy to understand Let's analyse employee engagement and productivity,  it's time to connect the dots and prove the impact of DEI. 🔬 How to Analyze Data to Prove the ROI of DEI 🔬 1. Organize the Data ➡️ Separate the metrics: ✱ Engagement Metrics  ✱ Productivity Metrics Start by creating a baseline  with the metrics before  your DEI initiatives kick-off. 2. Perform a Correlation Analysis Use a correlation test to check  for relationships between  engagement and productivity metrics. 🔍 Example: You might see a strong positive correlation  between improved employee engagement  and higher revenue per employee  or faster project completion. 3. Run a Regression Analysis Once you establish a correlation,  use a regression analysis  to predict the relationship. How does a 1% increase in engagement influence productivity? 📈 Example: A regression model could reveal  that for each 1% increase in  employee engagement,  you predict a 0.67% increase in  productivity. 4. Control for External Variables To make your data meaningful,  account for other factors like: ↳ Market conditions ↳ Company growth ↳ Economic changes This helps isolate the specific impact  of DEI on engagement and productivity. 5. Present Your Findings Visualize your data with  clear charts and key takeaways: Highlight how changes in  engagement directly impact  business outcomes  like revenue growth  or project success rates. There are three ways people apply to data jobs, and each way will always beat the ones under it. 1. Cold - spray and pray baby 2. Warm - networking or creative outreach to make a personal connection at the company 3. Bespoke - the job was literally created for you I've gotten jobs each of the three ways, but the last time I got a job the cold way I was 22 years old and still had hair... I have two recommendations: 1) Cross the cold apply category off your list, and make sure to get some sort of warm connection anywhere you are looking 2) Manufacturing your own job might be less difficult than you think. Find a company you absolutely love, and do an interesting project to showcase your skills / how you can use your love for the company to do an amazing job. It won't always work, but if you do it 20 times, you'll probably have a job at the end of it. You can also use the projects as interesting portfolio pieces to help with your warm outreach.

I’m going to nerd out for a minute here… This morning I met with Mitch Stein, Matthew D., and Valerie Vierengel to work through data questions and clarifications on the first ever non profit DAF benchmark study K2D Strategies is working on with Chariot (givechariot.com). Watching Matthew tweak the data in real time was FUN (and yes – I realize I need to get out more…) But what was really cool was what we are seeing… some unsurprising data points… some intriguing… I think we’d all expect donor value to increase once someone makes their first DAF gift to an org. Indeed, that is what we are seeing. But, how about gift frequency? That was surprising to me… Spikes in DAF giving during episodic moments? Sure… But otherwise fairly consistent giving throughout the year? Maybe less expected. Data frames problems. People solve them. One way to maximize problem-solving time is to delegate the data work to a data analyst, and the best way that I’ve ever seen to organize behavior data is with @PBISApps. Also, PBISApps doesn’t pay me to be a fan…I just am! The data analyst doesn’t need to be particularly gifted with spreadsheets. They just need to be able to work through a template to frame a problem. Having a data analyst on your team allows everyone to come to the meeting ready to discuss the same problem, rather than wading through charts trying to frame dozens. The best practice is to assign someone on your team to frame a data-based problem prior to the meeting. That way, everyone arrives ready to solve a problem, rather than spending an hour or so discovering the problem. Moving from problem to solution is easier with a protocol. If you’re using @PBISApps, you’ll find drill-down templates and videos on their site. And, a universal template for problem-solving is on my website.
