Yet another study finds a pot of gold at the end of the #energytransition rainbow! In this case - $3 billion in savings to Illinois ratepayers (families, small businesses, and everything else) from 8.5 GW of #energystorage. That only scratches the surface, however. The study shows the "softer" benefits - reliability, reduced emissions, and the economic jolt - total $12-28 billion, well above the total cost. Here's the catch - all the intelligence we have at Clean Energy Associates (CEA) shows that while there is a massive global oversupply of lithium-ion batteries domestic supply will remain constrained through at least 2028. Grid conditions were tight this week as 90-degree temperatures enveloped much of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions. As a result, the Midcontinent Independent Sytems Operator (MISO) issued a Maximum Generation (Max Gen) Warning, PJM issued a Max Gen Alert, and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) issued an Energy Emergy Alert 1 (EEA1). During Max Gen Warnings and Alerts, grid operators warn power plant operators that electricity supplies on the grid are getting tight and instruct generation owners to take steps to ready their fleets to meet the moment. During an EEA1, all non-firm exports are curtailed, and all available resources are committed to meet demand. Tight electricity supply and higher demand drives higher pricing across United States’ largest power market! PJM Interconnection’s capacity auction has competitively secured resources to meet the regional transmission organization’s (RTO) reliability requirement for the 2025/2026 delivery year. PJM’s market footprint covers all or part of 13 states and the District of Columbia – an area with over 65 million people. Auction prices were significantly higher across the RTO due to decreased electricity supply caused primarily by generator retirements, increased electricity demand, and the implementation of FERC-approved market reforms. The auction cleared a diverse mix of resources, including 48% of gas, 21% of nuclear, 18% of coal, 1% of solar, 1% of wind, 4% of hydro, 5% of demand response and 2% from other resources. The auction produced a price of $269.92/MW-day for much of the PJM footprint, compared to $28.92/MW-day for the 2024/2025 auction. Auction prices fluctuate annually based on the need for investment in generation resources. PJM plans to hold the next base residual auction, for the 2026/2027 delivery year, in December, 2024. A new report from Energy Futures examines what is required for B.C. to achieve its mandated ZEV sales target of 90% in 2030 and 100% in 2035. The report finds there are significant public charging infrastructure and electricity generation gaps that need to be closed if the government's targets are to be achieved. B.C. is planning on building 10,000 public chargers by 2030, 30,000 less than what is required to support an increasingly electrified fleet. Powering this infrastructure depends on an additional 2,700 GWh of electricity generation capacity. Automakers are committed to helping the provincial government move to a lower carbon economy and increase the number of ZEVs on B.C.'s roads. There are now over 80 ZEV models available in every size and vehicle segment with an additional 40 models expected this year. But achieving these ambitious sales targets depends on stronger consumer support in the form of consumer financial and non-financial incentives, charging infrastructure, grid investments, and education. Duke Energy Corporation Energy recently published its Indiana Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) on October 3rd, outlining the significant challenges of phasing out coal while expanding #renewableenergy. As Indiana's largest electric supplier, Duke Energy is navigating the difficult balance between reducing #carbonemissions and maintaining #gridreliability amidst rising demand driven by electrification and the rapid growth of #datacenters. While this IRP focuses on Indiana, it highlights a challenge faced by electric suppliers across the country: how to transition to clean energy without compromising the stability of the grid. This morning, the Lansing State Journal published a great opinion piece titled "#Michigan's Energy Future Requires #Investment in Power Grid." The piece argues that the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)'s portfolio of regional transmission projects "will greatly improve the reliability of the electricity grid." 💡 As we move into 2025, I'm sensing that the theme and focus for the year by the overall US energy sector will be transmission, transmission, and more transmission. State by state analyses of where electric power is generated is not very helpful. What's more policy-informing is where consumed power comes from. Renewable energy advocates in Minnesota and Michigan are celebrating recent legislative successes. In Minnesota, the legislature passed the Minnesota Energy Infrastructure Permitting Act, which streamlines the permitting process for wind, solar, battery storage, and transmission line projects, reducing wait times by up to nine months. The reforms aim to help Minnesota achieve its 100% clean energy goal by 2040.
