Recently attended the Association for Career and Technical Education Region IV in Albuquerque, NM. The states included in this region are: New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. I was introduced to CTE last year at their national conference. Many of the members informed about their regional conferences so why not check one out. These are smaller and more intimate conferences where you can get more time with the associates of those regions. I strongly recommend attending regional conferences. Networking! When at the conferences, I do my best to meet with every vendor, if they are at their booth. Ironically enough, the booth next to me was staffed by Colt Almodova. Colt grew up on Oahu and attended the prestigious Kamehameha Schools. Then received his degree from Arizona State University and now is in sales at Advanced Technology Consultants. The other theme that keeps appearing is how Careers By the People ties tightly into the career clusters of the CTE Programs. Higher education carries with it an expectation that students are equipped with the skills to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information effectively. In today's information-saturated world, that's an appropriate (and needed) expectation; HOWEVER , those critical thinking skills must be taught, developed, and practiced. We empower students to navigate complex issues, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to society, but we must prioritize committing educational time to actually teaching these skills AND subsequently offer low-risk opportunities for our students to then practice these abilities. Prioritizing education that goes beyond memorization and fosters a culture of inquiry, curiosity, and thoughtful engagement is a worthy goal, but we must invest in tangibly helping our students develop the knowledge and tools to do so. #HigherEd #Academia #CriticalThinking #Education #StudentSuccess

Kevin Harrington + Scott Pulsipher from Western Governors University makes for a great podcast episode on The EdUp Experience. Kevin asks Scott for lessons from WGU and one that stuck with me is the compunding value of an obsessive and relentless focus on student outcomes. I talk a lot about being "obsessed" at Rize Education and I both heard and felt that word from Scott, including the below snippet where Scott talks about the importance of education delivering ROI as a value proposition. "The student should be the primary beneficiary of everything that we do in education. [When you believe that], you start obsessing about instructional experience. You obsess about the different ways you provide mentoring and advising support. You're obsessing about how you scaffold together their different subject matters into a degree program. You're thinking differently about how you make that more integrated in its design.
