Big day for the Rails Foundation: 1Password is the first new Core member to join the board since we launched. Looking forward to working with Jason Meller on the board. You might be thinking: 1Password? Rails? YES. 1Password recently acquired Kolide, a Rails app, and integrated it into the core of its XAM. With today’s world of remote work (and the apps we rely on at work) combined with the ever-increasing threat of data breaches and bad actors, this Rails app now handles “thousands of web requests per second, authorizes millions of authentication attempts, processes billions of asynchronous jobs each month, and consistently delivers four nines of annual uptime for customers”. Not bad for a Rails app, ey?

OpenAi has agreed to over an estimated $120m per year in data acquisition agreements with content publishers over the last year. three notes: 1) these agreements may be as much about reducing potential liability and enhancing reputation as they are about data acquisition. 2) we still haven't seen any agreements with scientific publishers like Elsevier or with specialized legal publishers like LexisNexis. 3) these are probably medium sized costs (considered all together) for OpenAI - compute and salaries are much larger - but this is still not insignificant.

This is a cool project, and another example of the emerging "replace stateful storage with S3" trend. I do wonder at what point someone will package this sort of thing up into a FUSE filesystem to make it generally usable across existing services. Sharing some tough news: We're shutting down Eversync. After much consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close down Eversync, despite having 18 months of runway and a dozen satisfied customers. While we have the time and resources to explore further pivots, we have ultimately disproved our key hypotheses about the operations monitoring and automation space, and we don't see a sustainable path to scale. Therefore, we believe it's more prudent and professional to close down now rather than delay the inevitable. Throughout this journey, we've gained valuable insights that we believe could benefit other entrepreneurs and companies in this space. To share our experiences, we've written a blog article detailing our key learnings and how they led to this decision. This has without question been one of the hardest periods of my life, but I'm also truly grateful for the experience and the invaluable lessons that I've learned in these past years. We started off by assessing the relationship between web traffic and TV ratings… Do any correlations/trends exist that give worthwhile insight? There are several moving parts here - often, it is not a case of A+B=C. That being said, some thing we have been able to establish: The show title pages that do not receive the majority of traffic that is searching for it directly The shows that would disproportionately complement your portfolio (rather than anyone else's) The shows that have the best chance of highly efficient online marketing campaigns The shows/sports that don’t rate well, but are perceived as high value (churn reducers) The likelihood of underserved audiences that exist for new shows... There are a number of other trends that may prove to be significant (and require more testing!).

Polls can be a cheat code for earned media, and a great way to build authority. But there are levels to this. Here's how one of the best I've seen - Capital One - does it. (And what I'd do differently to increase earned coverage). Led by Shena Ashley, PhD, Capital One's Insights Center is a masterclass in leveraging polls to create unique insights that would do incredibly well via earned syndication. Here’s what they do great: ✅ Content that sticks: Crucial issues > fleeting trends. Focusing on topics like financial stability, mobility, and entrepreneurship, it's easier to rationalize investment on topics with a longer shelf life. Their insights + stories can drive coverage for months to come. ✅ Visual storytelling: Data doesn’t have to be dry, and Capital One presents original insights through clear and eye-pleasing visuals that are easy to understand. Publishers like charts, they love colorful charts, and they LOVE colorful charts that are easy to understand. Check, check, check. ✅ Strong methodologies and extensive polling numbers: Capital One frequently involves 7k+ participants in their studies - they are not half a**ing it. Well explained methodologies are table stakes to get your polls covered, and Capital One does a great job outlining their data collection process, sample size, and research methodologies.   ✅ Easy to steal: Each report has multiple easy to take stories/soundbites, and are also written as full pieces of content, which can be taken as whole. Finally --- if I could change one thing... Add a byline. Brand publishing NEEDS a byline - no news outlet wants to cover a story that can't be credited back to a human. All in all, polls can be incredibly valuable for driving earned syndication - check out Capital One's Insights Center in comments for killer examples.

Excited to give this talk! Lots of interesting challenges and learnings along the way from POC to production to making slides. Zefr is at the forefront of using LLMs to power the highest quality, lowest cost social media measurement platform in the world. The pace of change in Gen AI is so fast my slide updates from last week are already stale. Knew I should have procrastinated!
