We have two Presidential candidates on the cusp of two separate generations. There is an entire generation of BOOMERS wedged between them. I was facilitating a workshop on "Leading Across the Generations" in Seattle yesterday. I shared a slide on the ages of each of the five generations.. and then I realized this gap. At the time of accepting the nominations this past summer, Trump was 78 and Harris was 59. It's nearly a "MATURE" vs. "GEN X" showdown today. In the book "Gray Goldfish," Brian Doyle and I break down each of the five generations. We underline the key drivers that shaped the attitudes and approaches of each generation. Let's chat MATURES first. Matures grew up in, and were shaped by, an era (think World War II and the Great Depression) that required selflessness and sacrifice. It was about working together to achieve a common goal. Work was serious business to the Mature. In 1940, automaker Henry Ford fired someone on his assembly line when the person was “caught in the act of smiling” and then later “laughing with the fellows.” Ford said, “When we are at work, we should be at work."  “Duty, Honor, Country” were words that defined the Mature generation. Not “duty, honor, country ... but I have to leave work early today because my son has a soccer game” like we’ll see with later generations. Sum up MATURES in one word... it'd be DUTY. How about GENERATION X? Gen X can be cynical and even sarcastic. The first shift that changed for Gen Xers compared to previous generations was marriage. Their parents divorced at a greater rate than any other generation before or since. About half of all children with parents married in the 1970s saw them divorce—that’s compared to 11% for children born in the 1950s. As a result of more single-parent households, Generation X children came home to empty houses. They were even labeled “latch key children” because of it. So, from an early age, Gen Xers learned to rely on themselves. They needed to create their own fun and take greater responsibility for their own well-being. Both of these attributes translated into the type of adults and employees they would become. Gen X’ers not only saw the need to look out for themselves at home, they also started to see the need to look out for themselves at work as employment became less stable. Unlike previous generations, Gen Xers saw lifelong employment with the same company end. In addition to questioning authority, Generation X was also the first generation to mix fun in business in earnest, and they made it known that they cared about their lives outside of work. Sum up GEN X in one word... it'd be BALANCE. Back to the candidates. Trump’s assertive, results-driven style reflects the Matures’ value of duty and resilience, while Harris’s balanced, adaptable approach mirrors Gen X’s emphasis on self-reliance and progress. Together, they bring contrasting generational perspectives on leadership, shaped by the different worlds they grew up in.

What's in your leadership Library? Not your kindle or your nook or on your podcast line up. What printed books are in your possession that help you with leadership? Tomorrow I start leading an annual LeaderShip Cohort for terrific ongoing client partner Oregon Resource Association. In fact, this is the 5th annual Cohort ~ and here are 6 observational thoughts. 1. When you focus on the people in the room, not those who aren't, everyone has a better experience. The size of audience has little to do with possible action and impact. Those present at the present 🎁 and deserve full focus. 2. Experimenting with format variables is highly likely and helpful - i.e. number of sessions, format, length, space. We started with 3 sessions, then 3 again, then 4, then 6 - and this year it's 5. Partially to celebrate the 5th year of the series. The registered students will tell you what's working vocally and behaviorally. 3. Be willing to add a group and perhaps a 2nd session. We added a 2nd cohort group [max 30 per group] the very first year due to enthusiastic response! Same day, 2 different times, everybody in. That may have also boosted further registration. 4. Have a focused area of growth and be sure to build sessions ecosystemically. A theme is another way of stating this: what's the purpose of the gathering for growth? Having a theme jump starts the connection within the group, since the purpose is aligned from the start. Ours is LeaderShip, and this year I've chosen 5 books to utilize for the 5 classes. 5. Enjoy the organic nature of adjustment as you progress. In every class there are revelations! Respond to those and use them to enhance the future classes. Reference them so that people know they're being heard and their contribution is fuel for the group. If you teach online and in person series, what lessons and observations have you found lightbulby? I've been reflecting on the insights shared in the Care Washing article from HBR, resonating deeply with the challenges highlighted. The statement emphasizing the impact of neglecting culture issues on direct reports is a poignant reminder for us all. "Some leaders overvalue the optics of harmony in the workplace and may lack self-awareness, underestimating the potentially devastating impact their lack of attention to thorny culture issues can have on their direct reports." This reflection underscores the critical need for improvement in leadership practices. All of us need to commit to creating workplace environments where transparency, authenticity, and addressing challenging issues are prioritized. This year, I started an awesome new role. I'm a Facilitator and Leadership Coach for Braven and their Career Accelerator Program. Specifically, I lead a cohort of college students at San Francisco State University and help accelerate their career progression. Two tips that have made me especially successful in my facilitation: 1. Don't be afraid of silence. If you ask for sharing or feedback, and no one speaks right away, allow the silence to be there. -Keep breathing. -Create spaciousness for people to share. -Offer patience so those who may be slower to share can feel the invitation. Your comfort with silence will invite others to speak up. 2. Support participants in fully arriving. I start each session with a 2-3 minute guided meditation. This reason I do this: I hear from my students that they are sometimes overwhelmed by the volume of homework, studying required for exams, stress about their grades, and just not enough time in the day. Some of them also work nearly full time jobs in addition to being in school. This works well because: -Sometimes people are joining directly from their last class, and it's helpful for them to have a distinct end to the last one, and the beginning of mine. -Taking a pause in the middle of a busy day, especially at the end of the day can make a huge difference. -Calming the mind and guiding people to a relaxed, psychologically safe state enables them to be fully creative and optimally receptive to learning. This article from the WSJ highlights how more people find themselves lacking real and meaningful connections at work since the pandemic. Loneliness is bad for individual health AND business. But here’s the thing, it’s also important to recognize when some of those cultural patterns might be holding us back. 💡 So, how does your cultural heritage influence your career and leadership development? 🔵 Guiding Your Career Path: Many of us gravitate toward careers that reflect the values we grew up with. Maybe it’s a passion for helping others, a commitment to social justice, or that relentless drive to succeed no matter what. 🔵 Shaping Your Leadership Style: The way we lead is often a mirror of the values we were raised with. Take the emphasis on community and solidarity in many Latina cultures that naturally translates into a leadership style that’s all about collaboration, empathy, and working toward the greater good. 🔵 Inspiring Resilience: Our cultural heritage also teaches us resilience. Think about the stories we’ve heard from our ancestors overcoming adversity, pushing through against all odds. But here’s where it gets real. Sometimes, the very patterns we’ve grown up with can hold us back... 💡 Practicing Self-Awareness: It’s so important to be self-aware and recognize when certain beliefs or patterns might not be serving us anymore. Like, if you’ve always thought that asking for help is a sign of weakness, maybe it’s time to flip that script, you know?. Embracing collaboration as a strength can open so many doors. 💡 Taking Intentional Action: Once you’ve identified those patterns that might be getting in the way, it’s all about taking action to build a leadership style that’s both true to who you are and effective in the modern world. ✨My cultural heritage led me to be a passionate and relentless advocate for supportive spaces.
