I've seen mixed messages on the growth trends of warehouse automation. Anecdotally, some firms are holding fast while others are actively building new projects. This report suggests the future growth trends are more pessimistic. #automation, #logistics, #robotics

And now it is official....at least temporarily while both sides come back to the negotiation table and open up talks on the bigger elephant in the room - automation. It is great news for a Friday morning and it helps to take some of the pressure off the impending backload for US-based importers and exporters, but it may be the calm before the larger storm on the horizon. While attention now shifts to the boxes which were offloaded in Altamira MX, Freeport BH, and Cartagena CO by carriers looking to bypass the USEC and USGC port disruptions, customers need to remain vigilant and keep an eye on the negotiations as they develop and be prepared for what comes next if a deal cannot be reached. In the meantime, my hope is that the carriers will do the right thing and pick up those "in-transit" containers stuck at the alternative discharge ports and deliver them to their intended destination ports as quickly as possible. Supply chains get ready - according to WSJ, the ILA (International Longshoremen’s Association) concluded meetings last week aimed at finalizing plans for the union’s first walkout targeting East Coast and Gulf Coast ports in 50 years. The expiration of the current contract is now just three weeks away and no negotiations on a new agreement are on the calendar. Union President Harold Daggett says the ILA will not sit down with employers unless they agree to a 77 percent wage increase over six years, a big jump from the 32 percent wage increase the union won for West Coast longshoremen last year. The impasse has left shipping industry executives increasingly pessimistic about reaching an agreement before the contract expires. With the prospect of a strike that could hit the fragile U.S. economy hard, some industry officials hope the Biden administration will use federal law to force cargo handlers to return to work. https://lnkd.in/eJ_dHtRq

Even though port workers have returned, the strike has pushed the issue of automation into the spotlight. While automation is seen as a potential solution to improve port efficiency and reduce labor costs, unions are strongly opposed. They argue that automation threatens jobs and fails to deliver the promised productivity gains. On the flip side, proponents believe it can put ports in a better position to handle future disruptions and increase throughput. Somehow, the sides will need to find a balanced approach. #usps PSLW INCREASES APPROVED. As predicted the change was approved although various organizations filed to have it stopped. The PRC was not 100% convinced on USPS analysis of the market share and numbers they presented and the effect to the market but moved to approve anyway. I believe that USPS is moving to have shipper negotiate directly oz based Ground Advantage NSA’s. It will be interesting to see how carriers provide new services to fill any gaps in the market. July 9 the PRC filed order #7260 -Order Acknowledging Price Adjustments for Parcel Select The ordering paragraphs include: The Commission acknowledges the proposed price changes to be consistent with applicable law.
