The New Jersey Society of CPAs food drive to benefit the Community FoodBank of New Jersey starts on September 28th, but until then, there is still an enormous need to take care of our communities through the remaining summer months. Thanks to a recent conversation with Kelsey Nakamura, Matthew Filik, CFP® and Rebecca Moore, I learned about what summer looks like at the food bank. CFBNJ's Child Nutrition team has diligently worked to get summer feeding programming launched. Through the Summer Food Service Program, a bridge was built to address the summer nutrition gap for kids who receive free or reduced-price school meals during the school year, often their only nutritious meal of the day. The program serves breakfast and lunch to kids in need at 45 Summer Feeding sites across the state. More than 107,000 meals were served last summer and were prepared in CFBNJ's kitchen with the help of volunteers and FSTA students.  -Nearly 1 million people in New Jersey are food insecure, about 1 in 11, including over 260,000 children - overall, this is a 22% increase over last year. For kids, it's a 33% increase. -Child Hunger in NJ: 1 in 10 children in New Jersey face food insecurity. In Southern NJ, it’s 1 in 7. -The average cost of a meal in New Jersey is 5% higher the nationwide average. -The average cost of a meal in New Jersey has increased 11% since last year. Hunger is something we can help address all year round and together, we can be a part of ending hunger in our state.
