Iger says it’s their “biggest foray ever” into gaming and now Disney is going to allow developers "the opportunity to create their own wholly unique Disney-themed gaming experiences" (see pocketgamer article in comments) Why is this significant? Well, the House of Mouse is the undoubted master of IP building and crucially of CONTROLLING how they’re managed. And whilst in these days of UGC platforms it’s not unusual for IP to be ‘borrowed’ by creators, this marks an acknowledgment by Disney that by ceding *some* control (amount tbc) it puts their characters and worlds into the hands of many more users and creators than ever before. It sounds risky handing over your IP right? Especially when you can’t fully dictate how it will be used? (Again, the extent to which Disney will hand over the reigns with their IP is to be revealed) but this marks an acknowledgement of the user-centric era that you may have heard me and others talk about. Joe Condon explains it eloquently in his excellent newsletter - also linked in comments. Disney opening up use of their IP is powerful because it unlocks: 💰‘Hands Off’ Marketing & Revenue Generation - in a simplified way, the beauty of UGC is that once all the assets have been created and the IP integrated into the platform, the power can be with the creators to do a lot of the heavy lifting in marketing the IP and building the experiences that can eventually drive revenue for your brand. It’s a win-win. Low-lift, large reach, and quick feedback on what’s resonating, and what’s not. 💭Insight into Crossovers & The Big Screen Implications - Disney has such diverse IP that it attracts audiences from Gen A to Baby Boomers. With Fortnite about to play home to a concoction of these IP, it’ll provide invaluable (and real-time) feedback on which of their IPs are resonating the most with Fortnite’s audience, and what crossovers are most popular. You’d imagine this insight will be helping to advise decisions at Disney around which of their IPs are worth funding for future films and crossovers on the big screen so they get the most bang for their buck.

The latest Radio World eBook includes a great QA with Chris Gould of All In Media (part of Xperi Inc.) on how its Rapid solution fits into the metadata ecosystem. As Chris explains, Rapid enables broadcasters to "manage the creation, synchronization, and distribution of metadata associated with their audio services across broadcast and IP platforms." He further explains how "metadata is the key that ensures a listener has the best experience while consuming the station's content." From the Latest FilmLA Report • Scripted TV production in Los Angeles dropped 99% in Q3 2023 compared to 2022. • FilmLA calls for a significant expansion of California’s $330 million production incentive due to a 20% drop in local filming. • Other jurisdictions like New York, Ontario, Georgia, and the U.K. offer more competitive, uncapped or larger subsidies, putting California at a disadvantage. • Strikes in 2023 and a decline in Peak TV also contributed to a production slowdown. • Global production declines occurred, with Georgia and the U.K. also seeing reduced TV releases. • California temporarily boosted its incentives in 2021, but ongoing state budget deficits limit further expansions. • FilmLA warns California must act to support its entertainment industry or face continued market share losses. “The UK music industry, with support from the UK Government, is seeking your help to identify resources that raise awareness of the significance of metadata in ensuring creators are fairly paid and credited for their tracks. In music, metadata is information which describes who contributed to a track’s creation, and how – such as who wrote a song, who performed on a recording, and who owns the individual rights in the work or recording. Metadata includes unique identifiers, such as the ISWC, ISRC, IPI and IPN, as well as title and contributor information. Education and awareness of the importance of metadata is vital for all parts of the creative value chain, from those creating songs and recordings, through to those responsible for delivering data to platforms, CMOs and others, including artist managers and A&R departments. Your responses to this survey will inform the work of the Metadata Education Group, one of the expert industry working groups formed to help deliver improvements to metadata practice as part of the UK Metadata Agreement. There are a myriad of cheap and plastic styluses that ship for free with most e-readers and e-notebooks from companies such as Onyx Boox, Meebook, Hyread, Readmoo and other Chinese companies. The Amazon Kindle Scribe, Kobo, Remarkable 2, and SuperNote all have a line of basic styluses with limited functionality. If you want to spend way more money, they also have a line of premium styluses with expanded features such as tilt recognition and erasers. Some have no charging capability, while others do. There is also a complete line of 3rd party styluses made of wood, aluminum and higher-grade materials compatible with most e-notes on the market. With all of these choices of digital stationery, why don’t they support internals capable of receiving firmware updates for expanded functionality?

“GEMA, a German performing rights collection society and licensing body, has introduced a licensing model for AI providers, seeking to address the use of copyrighted music in AI training and the creation of AI-generated songs. The launch follows a study commissioned by GEMA and SACEM, and conducted by consultancy and research group Goldmedia, which projects that the generative AI music market will reach over $3 billion in value by 2028. GEMA, which represents copyrights for over 95,000 members and over 2 million copyright owners globally, says it is the first collecting society to develop a licensing approach that attempts to balance technological progress with creative work protection. The approach considers both the use of music for AI model training and the generation of AI content based on this training.” “…Through its new licensing model, GEMA proposes that authors should receive compensation beyond a one-time payment for training data. It suggests that such one-off payments may not sufficiently compensate authors given the potential revenues from AI-generated content. A kinda funny article as their stock price is always being manipulated and meaningless especially that if you look at their major shareholders it is obvious that Universal. the biggest record company in the world., intends to go private in 2026 with Bill Akeman, Tencent, Vivendi, Vincent Bolore and a future shareholder, I will not name, have planned to go private along. Remember that under their new structure 50% of earnings must be distributed annually via dividends hence why they partner with companies like Reservoir to purchase assets [which they double dip on by holding the distribution rights.] Bill and Vincent are brilliant billionaires and once Grainge retires the 'new partner' will make an offer to all other shareholders so don't be surprised to see the stock keep going down so UMG can do more stock buybacks diluting 'the sheep'. PS - They know a lot about Superfans and how to exploit such plus if you look closely their merch business has increased by close to 40% PS 2 - They are also diversifying into the ,ive business like Sony. The latter is buying live venues every month across the world.
