At the Product Stewardship Society's annual conference in Denver, CO, a thought-provoking theme is emerging that for many years has been a kind of elephant in the room. Keynote speaker John Warner (father of Green Chemistry) sparked a conversation around ethics. Carmen Reznik, Ph.D. and I further explored this with attendees as we looked at what makes an outstanding product steward. The discussions notably underscored the significance of ethics and integrity in Product Stewardship. Advocating for stakeholders (especially those who might not otherwise have a voice at the corporate table), reflecting company values, and standing up for your own were key points raised. I have no crystal ball per se, but using various indicators and resources from the entire Enhesa group (from conversations and initiatives from NGOs, trade groups, and regulatory authorities, to empirical political, chemical and regulatory data), we can safely make some very educated "guestimations" or "predictions".

When speaking with friends or family outside of the chemistry sphere, it's sometimes difficult to explain the "value" that analytical solutions provide to various industries. Of course, tools that help scientists detect disease or ensure safe drinking water provide value - but these easy, fun examples are only a small part of the total business. So, I find articles like this very instructive - what's the value of properly vetting a feedstock before putting it in a fancy catalytic reactor? Approximately $500,000,000 per quarter, according to this article discussing an ethylene plant that was "fouled" at DOW Chemical! There are thousands upon thousands of similar chemical production facilities that provide the raw materials we use every day - for fuels, plastics, etc. So, the proper analytical solution provides (or in this case, protects!) enormous value in the chemical manufacturing space. LECO provides solutions here as well - lots of exciting work characterizing "pyrolysis oils", which are exciting, renewable, but also chemically troublesome feedstocks.
