The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has unveiled a raft of revisions and resources designed to help financial institutions set ambitious near-term emissions reduction targets. The changes to #SBTi criteria are set to come into force on 30 November 2024. Under the new criteria, financial firms with validated targets must align their operational and power emissions from a pathway aligned with "well-below" 2C of warming to one aligned with 1.5C of warming. They must also meet #Scope1 and #Scope2 emissions reduction targets in a five-to-10-year timeframe, down from the five-to-15-year window they were afforded previously, according to the SBTi. #Sustainability #ESG #NetZero #Climatetargets

Climate Capital Guidebook: The Biden-Harris Administration is releasing a new Climate Capital Guidebook to provide a simple, comprehensive map of capital programs across the federal government that are available to climate-related start-ups, small- and medium-sized businesses, and their investors. Great discussion. Heather Conforto Beatty’s point at the very end of the discussion a good one: Institutional allocators typically don’t have “a spot” for climate solutions. When it’s not an asset class, (and therefore lack of advisors/gatekeepers who specialize), makes it more challenging to commit, especially in public equities. #sustainableinvesting #climatesolutions

Attention all dairy lovers (yep, I see you out there, cheese lovers 🧀 & milk chuggers 🥛): I bet you haven't considered the methane (which is 80x more potent than CO2) that those food choices are pumping into the atmosphere. Methane is responsible for about half of the lifecycle emissions of an average dairy product - all because those dairy cows burp...a lot! Given the adverse impact of methane on climate (with methane emissions causing about a third of the warming we are experiencing today), it is time for the financial sector to focus on encouraging the food and agriculture industry to do more to reduce methane emissions. In the words of my colleagues, there's stuff we can do about it: 1) New solutions are emerging that can have a big effect on livestock methane 2) Measurement is also getting better 3) There is policy support available in many places; and 4) The industry is starting to work together to tackle this issue, such as through the EDF-supported Dairy Methane Action Alliance. This is a crucial move from the Biden Administration in support of high integrity and high quality voluntary carbon markets! The principles are much needed by companies wanting to take ambitious climate action and include; ensuring carbon credits represent real decarbonization, avoiding environmental and social harm, prioritizing emissions reductions within value chains, disclosing the nature of credits, accurately reflecting climate impacts, improving market integrity, and facilitating efficient market participation while lowering transaction costs.

When Katie Hall and I built Galvanize Climate Solutions we did so with the belief that we could have the greatest impact on climate by demonstrating to the market that investing in the energy transition leads to outsized returns vs concessionary outcomes. Secretary Kerry is joining Galvanize because he shares that conviction. New report by LBNL on #climate-forcing emissions from plastic. This is really the first definitive study attributing emissions to the plastic chemical industry and it finds about 2.25 GtCO2/yr.
