Candidates often ask me about security clearances because the positions for which I recruit require active security clearances (a DOE Q or DoD Top Secret). ⭐How do I get one? ⭐Can't I be considered if I'm willing to obtain a clearance? ⭐Can I pay to get a security clearance? ⭐Why can't I take the job and then get a clearance once I'm in the job? It's a bit of an egg and chicken situation. People may want to work for the government as a contractor but without a clearance they're not qualified for the roles; most of the time, a security clearance is required to be considered for the position. In cases where you don't have a security clearance, and you want one, I recommend apply directly for federal positions. In some situations you may be hired as a federal employee without a security clearance, and you'll be granted one after you're hired. To obtain a security clearance, you must be: ⭐US citizen ⭐Pass a federal background check (criminal records, credit history, work history, etc.) ⭐Pass a federal drug screen (they check for marijuana in a federal drug screen) ⭐Pass an interview with an investigator (for the higher level clearances), in which you'll be asked questions about your personal life, from alcohol consumption and drug use to affiliations with certain groups that may not align with national security interests Getting a security clearance can take as little as 3 months or as long as a year or more. Helpful hint: I was reviewing a company’s PowerPoint presentation who said they submitted a supplier profile. I went to review said profile, but I could not find it. They referenced their company’s name in the presentation in three different types of abbreviations. Nowhere did they state their full company’s name that was on the profile. Remember, I don’t know your company. If you want to do business with me, make sure your profile and your presentations and your Sam registration all coordinate. There is nothing small about small business!!

How not to approach THIS GovCon consultant.... ⛔ "I need you to find me contracts." ⛔ "I want you to find me a prime who will subcontract to me." ⛔ "I'm not interested in the data. Can you do that?" ⛔ "I'm not sure what I want to sell but I hear there's big money in Government contracts." ⛔ "I'd like you to [insert task] for me. I don't care how you do it I just need it done ASAP." If you are interested in working with me, know I am picky about who I take on as a client. My clients must... ✅ have a desire to understand the process and look at the data ✅ understand that patience and persistent is necessary ✅ realize building relationships comes before winning contracts ✅ know what you want to sell before you start writing proposals ✅ understand that you need multiple avenues to find an entry point You have to learn about the Federal marketplace to have a successful and sustained presence. You have to study it. Sure you can pay consultants to do some of it for you, but when you talk to the Government, will you be able to speak their language? No. And I know this from experience when companies who weren't prepared would come into my office asking me, as a Contracting Officer, some of the same questions above.
