It's like karaoke - but you're not singing, you're playing as your cinematic character in VR, fighting against a game driven enemy, an AI agent, or your friend in multiplayer mode. I see a lot of applications for this, from bringing archaeological sites and museum exhibits to life by interacting with the people who once inhabited and used these sites, to online rehearsals or just friendly gatherings. Our MA HCI research at Advanced Reality Lab - Reichman University (ARL) focused on the embodiment effect: How different is the understanding of what is happening, the empathy for the characters on the different sides of the screen? What's the difference between watching and participating? It was scary at times when everything in the project died completely and I had to rebuild everything, but it only made the end result better, thank for your support, professor Jonathan Giron. It was a lot of fun watching your professor Doron Friedman get his hand chopped off by Darth Vader, and the results of the study surprised us and gave us with Shira Vilvovsky and Eran Erez a better understanding of what and how to do on the other side of the screen where VR allows you to be. Kartoon Studios (TOON) is taking a bold step forward in the adopting of AI into their workstreams and have the perfect spokeperson: Inspector Gadget! Generally, I think this is a very smart move with the best partner in town for AI (NVidia). But, there are a few sentences that might make you furrow your brow. My thoughts following the article quotes within the [ ] marks. "...Gadget A.I. also revolutionizes the dubbing process, traditionally a laborious and costly endeavor" [meaning Kartoon Studios animation will be dubbed by AI without the usage of real actors?] "(Gadget AI will)...also include a spectrum of other production services, including character design, scriptwriting, music, animation.." [Meaning scripts and art and music will originate from AI software pulling from a certified data set. But at the same time, this means no human will write or design episodes and more importantly, no creative individual will have royalty-generating income from work created?] Lots to unpack! I suggest reading very carefully into the curated marketing vernacular from both companies. They're walking a delicate tightrope on a hot-button topic. Just spent a week evaluating the top 12 Blender based cloud render farms and I have a little write up to share! //////////////////////////// Blender is an incredible tool for creating 3D scenes and visuals for use in all sorts of projects. Over the years I have found this software to be one of the best creative tools for both of my studios; Sensebellum and Lumenarius. However, it takes A LONG TIME TO RENDER… It is common for each frame to take many minutes with even the fastest computer. Now imagine you need 1,800 frames rendered for a 60 second video at 4K resolution and it could easily take days or weeks. A good solution is to use the cloud! I.e. someone else’s computer! In the past I have used Concierge Render but they have gone out of business since a merger and acquisition. All I am looking for is a simple and easy to use platform with the following criteria: • Easy Upload. No FTP or weird client apps or buggy plugins. Simple! • Dashboard is Clear. Was it uploaded right? Where are my files? What is it costing? What is the progress? • Straightforward Pricing. I want to think of things in terms of dollars per frame. Hopefully cents. I don’t want to convert render hours to bespoke credits and then back to dollars. • Ability to Edit. Frame range, resolution, samples, noise threshold, etc. Having to re-upload each time to simply change what frames being rendered is a mess. • Plugins. Things like FlipFluids and ProceduralCrowds are a great feature! • Customer Support. Sometimes help is needed. What "business strategy"? Major legacy software corps are attempting to use the "compute cost to SaaS subs" ratio model perfected on cloud here in genAI. But they will fail, because unlike cloud there's no persistent distributed network needed for genAI, symmetrical hardware constraints for model-building are loosening, and it's a near certainty that people will be able to homebrew their models more effectively than on-prem compute was at replacing cloud compute. With those considerations, here's the theory we're taking a gamble on: generative AI models are content, not products themselves, and the ability to generate them should be shared with creators of content. With current processing hardware innovations, we can return to a more equitable model like envisioned in the early 90s, ditching the mainframe and terminal paradigm, and bringing the data and compute onto your desk and keeping it there. That means this moment is NOT a crisis for labor and indie, as has been claimed, but the greatest opportunity to reclaim ownership. Seeing the opportunity this way requires some anachronistic assumptions about computing, but this is our conclusion: we want to propagate true creator ownership of these tools and processes. If you’re a filmmaker and you use generative AI to make posters, pitch decks, trailers, etc. then I can’t take you seriously. Because what you’re saying is you’d rather use a tool that steals from artists rather than collaborate with actual artists. And I get it. Generative AI…it’s fast, cheap, and easy to use.
