AI in Focus:  Interactive Graphic Depicts Weight of Natural vs Man-Made Things on Earth An astrophysics and AI professor together with a computer science alumnus at Johns Hopkins University have created an interactive visualization of human activity on the planet. The infographic, called BioCubes, shows how man-made things now outweigh all forms of natural life. The graphics depict the relative relationship between biological and technological forms and how human activities have impacted the earth’s ecosystems since 1900—with biomass weight estimated at about 1100 Gt and technomass at 1200 Gt. Interestingly, concrete is the second most used substance (the first being water) and livestock now weigh almost twice that of the human population (0.2 Gt vs. 1.2 Gt, respectively.) BioCubes can be found at BioCubes.net. The co-creators also have created the Map of the Universe that displays the entire span of the known cosmos and can be found at mapoftheuniverse.net. Now they have raised an additional $44 million in a funding round led by IAG Capital Partners, with participation from Altair, Cisco Investments, NVIDIA, and others. The investment will accelerate the development of the company’s ChromX platform, a scalable and programmable photonics solution designed to meet the growing demands of AI data centers. Co-founder and CEO Vivek Raghunathan emphasized the need to move away from building larger data centers to solve performance and scalability issues, which are becoming unsustainable due to energy consumption and cost concerns. There's been a noticeable increase in VC activity from Q1 2024 and compared to Q2 2023. The uptick is largely driven by substantial deals in the AI sector. These large AI investments have skewed the overall figures. For many sectors outside of AI, the funding environment remains challenging. Startups in these areas continue to face tight conditions. The good news is that startups are adapting by revising their business models to focus on generating revenue and cash flow earlier in their lifecycle. We're also seeing an increase in consolidation, with smaller emerging companies being acquired or acquiring other businesses to strengthen their market position and resources. Both venture capital and equity markets tend to be cyclical in nature. The pace of technological advancements continues to accelerate at an accelerating rate. We're seeing more amazing companies and businesses at good valuations than ever.

New startup launches out of stealth to offer total RNA sequencing and free Gen AI-driven data analysis copilot. Based in California and Texas, Biostate AI , the scalable biodata foundry startup has raised more than $4 million to advance its total RNA sequencing uses its patent-pending Barcode-Integrated Reverse Transcription (BIRT) technology to affordably, scalably, and comprehensively analyze all types of RNA. In contrast, traditional gene expression profiling using RNA sequencing (RNAseq) typically only captures information from messenger RNA, which accounts for less than 10% of all known RNA species. Biologically important classes of non-coding RNA include long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), micro RNAs (miRNAs), circular RNAs (circRNAs), and enhancer RNAs (eRNAs). Biostate AI has filed 9 pending patents on its technologies, and collaborates with a number of industry partners on new technology development, including Twist Bioscience. AI Tech in Focus   AI and Nanotechnology Used to Detect Toxic Gases Researchers at University of Virginia School of Engineering have developed an advanced neural network and corresponding nano sensors to detect and track toxic gases. The system mimics the human sense of smell using tiny clusters of metal catalysts that are embedded in a graphene surface. When a toxic gas interacts and binds to the graphene, the conductivity of the sensors change, signaling the presence of the gas. The overall surface area of the clusters allows detection of leaks with extreme sensitivity and accuracy. Those gas sensors are paired with machine learning algorithms to pinpoint gas leaks in complex areas and communicate that data in real time to identify potential sources of leaks. According to the researchers, The World Health Organization attributes approximately 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide to outdoor air pollution due to respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD. It is hoped that further iterations of the system could be used in industrial, residential and urban settings to monitor air quality and provide more accurate and sensitive leak detection.
