We’ve been discussing how to keep RVTs engaged and retained within your office – let’s talk about engagement! Engage RVTs as the highly trained professionals that they are! Just veterinarians, RVTs are registered veterinary professionals who must fulfill their regulatory requirements to practice as an RVT. Did you know that RVTs can be delegated all areas of veterinary medicine, except making a diagnosis, determining the course of treatment, and performing surgery? Empowering your RVTs to work fully within their scope allows your veterinarians to focus on tasks they are exclusively trained to do. For example, RVTs can perform equine dental floats, obtain diagnostic images through MRI, CT, and ultrasounds (including pregnancy detection in beef cattle and small ruminants), conduct necropsies, perform artificial insemination, and apply rehabilitative techniques. By leveraging these skills, you can significantly enhance your practice’s efficiency and care quality. At the end of the day, RVTs are veterinary professionals that are essential to any practice. Consistent Communication with Your Veterinarian When it comes to your pet’s well-being, it’s important to establish and maintain an open, consistent line of communication with your vet. This collaboration is the bedrock for ensuring the long-term preventative care that your furry companion needs. Your vet's role extends beyond being there for emergencies. They're a knowledgeable guide, adviser, and vital partner in your pet's health journey. For them to provide the best possible guidance and care, they need to be informed about all aspects of your pet's daily life. Awareness of your pet's normal behavior and physical condition is crucial to providing optimal care. However, interpreting these observations accurately and knowing when and how to act is where your vet's expertise comes into play. Should you notice changes in appetite, behavior, or activity levels, it's essential to relay these changes to your vet as soon as possible. Subtle behavior shifts such as increased thirst, abnormal sleepiness, or changes in grooming habits can be easy to dismiss as minor quirks, but they could be early indicators of potential health issues, such as diabetes or arthritis. By promptly communicating these observations to your vet, potential health issues can be nipped in the bud before they escalate into serious conditions. Equally important is sharing any questions, concerns, or general observations about your pet with your vet. There's no question too trivial when it comes to your pet's health. Building a trust-based relationship with your vet allows them to understand your pet's unique circumstances and lifestyle comprehensively. This enables them to provide more personalized advice and preventative care strategies. Your veterinarian is an invaluable partner in your mission to ensure your pet's optimal health. This is just wrong guidance to sellers... If you're a veterinary practice owner planning to sell your practice, you should ignore this blog. The condition and quality of your hospital equipment will not add $1 to the purchase price from corporate. It may be applicable for private sales, but likely immaterial in the final analysis. Outstanding debts, hospital or owner, will not lower the purchase price from corporate by even $1. Applicable for private sales or associate buy-in to a limited degree. Suggesting you can 'time' your practice sale...may be the worst idea on this blog.
