This might be the most Wisconsin thing ever! Yesterday I met with Congressmen Steil at an Apple Orchard barn. 🍎🧑🏻‍🌾 While I regularly meet our elected officials to talk about housing issues for the National Association of Home Builders, this visit was particularly important. You see recently the federal government is trying to require all HUD Financing to include requirements from the 2021 IECC Energy Code. HUD Financing is supposed to be for affordable homes. However, the IECC code adds over $18,000 to the cost of a home in Wisconsin from a recent study. 😲 How are we supposed to have affordable home financing when we add $18,000 to the cost of a home? The ugly part of all of this is that this new code has provisions in it for new homes that take over 90 years to pay off! New construction homes account for less than 5% of the housing stock yet face the strictest requirements. Tell a customer straight to their face that something will take beyond their lifetime to pay off. Think they are going to want that? So since I have a really good relationship with Bryan they asked me if I could see if he would co-sponsor a bill to take care of this issue. Later that evening while he was talking to us at the event he mentioned this issue that home builders are having and explained the added costs. He is now seriously considering lending support to this issue. As an added bonus I showed him our new campaign to "Let Builders Build" and he thought it was great so we took a picture with the sign. #LetBuildersBuild This goes to show that talking to your elected officials, building a relationship with them can make a difference. 🇺🇸

Nice article for those not in the industry to read. However, I want to make it clear: BOTH Merit (Non Union) and Union companies have legitimate apprenticeship programs. It takes both types of companies to build projects for our City and if we keep up with this divisive mentality (only using Union companies or use of PLA's) then we are just hurting our small local contractors and ultimately our local economy (Non Union make up ~80% of contractors in MO and ~90%+ in KS.)

LinkedIn Nation! Day 3 of my, 1-plant-per-day Bill of Materials blitz with a client in the upper Midwest. Tremendous day today working inside of a huge storage bin. Think grain elevator, but bigger. One of the key points of this storage bin is that this organization has 12 of them. They are huge, almost hard to describe how big they are. Each of the 12 were manufactured in different years, and therefore are different in subtle, and major ways. The director of reliability for this organization began a campaign 3 years ago to standardize all the major parts. He is almost done with that campaign and the results are remarkable. Instead of stocking 12 of a particular component, they stock maybe 2 or 3, because of standardization. The BOM workshop went very smoothly today, mainly because the planner at this location is truly exceptional! Saving for a rainy day. Last night the central Iowa area received about 1” of rainfall, this would shut most landscapers down for the day, but team Alpha doesn’t give up quite that easy. Monsoon or drought, projects need to get built, deadlines need to be hit, and employees need paid. So on this “rain” day we still have over half our field staff working, installing site furnishings, weeding beds, pulling t-posts, installing rock and mulch off hard surfaces, catching up on equipment maintenance and doing our best not to make too much of a mess in the mud. Saving tasks like this for a wet day is a bit of a tricky game, but it pays off for us in increased asset utilization, increased employee income, and overall improved efficiency in our operation.

I got to play golf with a great organization in Big Shoulders Fund Northwest Indiana and an even better group of people in Allison (Lindenschmidt) Curtis with The STARTedUP Foundation, Curt Bowers with Wintrust Indiana and Josh Schoon with Berglund Construction who are all doing awesome things in the community. I've brought this up every time I play golf, and Alli convinced me to put it to paper, haha. Golf is a perfect metaphor for life: -You can practice constantly, pay for coaching and lessons, yet bad things can still happen. -But, just like life, good things can happen unexpectedly too. -You’ll make mistakes that are entirely your fault, and sometimes things happen that are completely out of your control. It’s how you respond that matters. -Life, like golf, is full of obstacles. You can find yourself directly behind them or narrowly miss them by an inch. Sometimes you can hit them directly and you get a "members bounce" and end up in a better spot than before. All of it can teach you resilience. -One day, you’re on top of the world, having the best round of your life, and the next, it all falls apart. Life is full of highs and lows, and the key is to keep showing up. -Taking things too seriously can drain the fun out of both golf and life, impacting not just yourself but those around you. It's about finding the right balance. -On the flip side, not taking it seriously enough means you won’t grow, improve, or reach your potential—whether in life or on the course. -Golf, like life, is way more fun when surrounded by people you enjoy being around. The company you keep matters. -Throwing money at problems won’t necessarily solve them. Success isn’t about having the best equipment; it’s about mindset, patience, and practice. (Despite this, I have "rage-purchased" new drivers and putters, just in case haha) -Some people turn to quick fixes like drinking or smoking to cope with challenges in both life and golf, but those rarely solve the deeper issues. -To hit the "perfect shot," there are dozens of things you need to do right before, during, and after your swing. You can’t focus on them all at once. Chasing perfection will only lead to frustration. Focus on progress. -It’s a mental game just as much as a physical one. What you tell yourself in your head often becomes your reality. Stay positive and focused, both in life and on the course. -You’ll encounter people who lie and cheat, but it’s how you hold yourself accountable that defines your character. -Ultimately, it's a competition against yourself. Life and golf aren’t about beating others—they’re about being better than who you were yesterday. At the end of the day, both golf and life are about enjoying the journey, not just chasing the score.
