While Silicon Valley and El Segundo may be the first names that come to mind when VCs think of deep tech hubs, New York is growing its footprint too. With leading deep tech startups like Hugging Face, RunwayML, Via, and Bowery Farming already based in the Big Apple, the city's deep tech ecosystem is slowly but surely headed in the right direction. In fact, New York's share of US fundraising continues to rise, surpassing 15% of total US VC deal volume for the first time in 2023. A recent New York Post article highlighted some of the exciting neighborhoods pushing deep tech innovation in the city, like the Brooklyn Navy Yard which is seeing a resurgence in hardware and manufacturing, the Brooklyn Army Terminal which is now a hub for climate-tech, and Manhattan/Brooklyn broadly which face a rapid uptick in AI/ML talent. I've only just started my journey in deep tech, but I wanted to give a special shoutout to folks like Rohan Pujara at Valhalla Ventures and Saptarsi Bandyopadhyay at NSIN who are actively fostering a more connected and inclusive deep tech community here in NYC. If you are a local founder or VC working in the space, I would love to connect and continue fueling NYC's deep tech boom.

Sonoma, Ca - Women in CVC Summit! 65 women in CVC gathered together for real, honest conversations about the challenges and complexities in CVC investing versus traditional venture capital. CVCs face challenges such as aligning the interests and expectations of the corporation and the startup, managing the relationship and communication between the two parties, and balancing the trade-offs between strategic and financial returns. But what's truly inspiring is the impact women are having in this space! Female-founded companies exit faster but make up a smaller share of total exit activity. CVCs participated in 17.5% of all female-founder deals in 2023, while more CVC firms have majority female checkwriter representation. Furthermore, female founders closed a record of 22.8% of total VC funds in 2023. We are thrilled to support this vibrant community of women alongside our friends and partners, Counterpart Ventures. In a weird way, market adversity and cash constraints faced by the growth-stage founders in Brazil and some other emerging markets are their golden ticket to the billion dollar startup club 🦄 The ‘foie gras effect’ sees startups in the US force-fed capital only to collapse under the weight of hyper growth (HBR). Today we see it happening with AI startups - they scale pre-maturely, burn tons of cash and raise at crazy valuations they won’t be able to justify in the future rounds of financing. We’ve seen this show before with crypto, D2C brands etc. Well that’s almost never (cuz forget 2021 funding craziness) the case in Brazilian tech investing especially at growth stage. While I don’t have data on LatAm, in 2022, in emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region, there was over 5 times as much capital deployed in early stage VC than in Growth Equity. I imagine its pretty comparable. So what does it mean? That means that founders in Brazil & certain emerging markets are more financially savvy, long-term focused and bake resiliency and adaptability into their mode of operations. Businesses they build tend to be problem-driven, faster to profitability and more complex than your average B2B SaaS. That also means that global Series B+++ investors should pay more attention to Brazil, LatAm and certain other emerging markets.
