Feds unveil another $1.7B this week to boost EV manufacturing. Meanwhile, US battery manufacturing volume is increasing, and battery tech is getting better and cheaper. As battery costs fall, EV prices will follow and drop too. Right now, EVs often costs more upfront than similar gas cars, yet total adoption is already increasing year over year. CAISO Takes the Lead in Q4 Battery🔋 Storage Capacity Growth 🚀, with ERCOT in Pursuit. The US 🇺🇸 battery storage capacity experienced substantial growth ↗️ in 2023, reaching a total operating capacity of 17.375 GW by the year's end, marking a notable 73% increase compared to the previous year. This expansion is evidenced by both government filings and company announcements. Furthermore, an additional 5.1 GW of capacity is anticipated to become operational in the first quarter of the following year, indicating a sustained momentum in battery storage deployment nationwide. At the close of Q4 2023, there were 18.308 GW of battery storage in advanced development and 11.935 GW under construction, according to data from the American Clean Power (ACP) organization. California stands out as the frontrunner in battery storage capacity within the US, boasting 8.107 GW, which represents a remarkable 64% year-on-year increase. Following closely behind is Texas, with 4.587 GW, demonstrating a substantial 141% growth compared to the previous year. In California's Independent System Operator (CAISO), 3.5 GW of battery storage projects in the generation queue have finalized interconnection agreements and are expected to commence operations in the current year. Additionally, an extra 3.2 GW is linked to solar 🔆 projects. 🔋 Swedish battery giant Northvolt files for bankruptcy 🌍 Swedish battery maker Northvolt filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S., delivering a major blow to Europe’s electrification ambitions. Once one of Europe’s most valuable privately held tech firms, the company said Thursday that the voluntary move will allow it to restructure its debt, scale back its business and secure a sustainable foundation for its continued operation. A partner of major European automakers, Northvolt produces lithium-ion batteries for the electric vehicle industry, which has recently been rocked by intensifying competition from the likes of China. The Stockholm-based business has long been regarded as Europe’s best hope of building a homegrown EV battery champion. Companies like QuantumScape, Solid Power, Inc. , and Factorial Energy, along with major automakers, are investing heavily in solid-state battery technology. While solid-state batteries hold immense promise for EVs, a commercially viable, mass-market EV with a solid-state battery is likely still a years away. Here's why: Challenges to Overcome: Manufacturing Complexity: Producing solid-state batteries at scale is significantly more complex and expensive than current lithium-ion batteries. This complexity leads to higher production costs and slower production rates. Durability and Longevity: Ensuring solid-state batteries can withstand the rigors of everyday EV use, including repeated charge cycles, temperature fluctuations, and vibrations, is crucial. While progress has been made, these batteries need to match or exceed the lifespan of current EV batteries. Interfacial Issues: Maintaining a stable interface between the solid electrolyte and the electrodes is critical for performance and longevity. Issues like dendrite formation can still hinder long-term reliability. Reasons for Optimism: Increased Investment and Research: The influx of resources is accelerating development and bringing solutions closer to reality. Promising Pilot Projects: Automakers like Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Corporation, and Volkswagen Group have announced plans to introduce #EVs with solid-state batteries in the coming years, albeit in limited numbers initially. These pilot projects will provide valuable real-world data and pave the way for wider adoption. Technological Breakthroughs: Researchers are constantly making advancements in materials science and manufacturing processes, leading to improved performance, lower costs, and increased scalability. Timeline: While some optimistic projections suggest solid-state batteries could be in mass-market EVs as early as 2025-2026, a more realistic timeline is likely closer to 2030. StoreDot predicts it's a decade away. This timeframe allows for further refinement of the technology, scaling up of production, and cost reductions to make them competitive with existing battery technologies. In Conclusion: The buzz around solid-state batteries is justified, as they offer the potential for significant improvements in EV range, charging time, and safety. While challenges remain, the progress made so far and the ongoing investment suggest that we are indeed getting closer to the commercialization of solid-state batteries in EVs, but unfortunately not in this decade.

To Put Today's EV News in Perspective, It Helps to Take the Long View Recent EV headlines have been dire. Tesla layoffs, Ford and Rivian losses, and GM's stumbling raise concerns. EV opponents are claiming EVs are inferior products, foisted on customers by inept governments before their time. Some is true – EVs are currently too expensive. Charging networks are inadequate and often poorly maintained. Early adopter markets appear sated and the masses haven’t yet seen affordable/attractive models. But to write off EVs is premature and mistaken. EVs will eventually prove to be the superior technology, and dominate future markets. To understand why, you have to drop the short-term view, and comprehend the inevitable evolution in technology. And look at China. The EV propulsion system is better: 4.4 times more efficient than ICE vehicles. EV/battery technology is still young. So is the accompanying charging infrastructure. But the tech is inevitably going to get better; Battery companies make new announcements near daily, w/respect to chemistries, densities, charging speeds, duration. That should not be a surprise. With human brains yoked to supercomputers, there’s no doubt as to the direction battery chemistry is going. Examples: China’s CATL is warranteeing a 1 million mile battery; Lucid Air’s battery can charge about 300 miles in 15 minutes. That rate of technological change is only likely going to accelerate. Focusing on underlying technology leads to the inevitable conclusion: today’s bloodletting will be forgotten as EVs - once mature - are destined to be recognized as superior. In the West, we haven’t yet embraced an electric future. But China has. A report last week from Inside EVs describing the Beijing Auto Show commented, “the showroom floor was filled to the gills with new electrified models from every single domestic automaker. They all had something to prove, and by god, they were trying… No matter the price point, they all had responsive, integrated vehicle interfaces that were quick, pretty, & ubiquitous.” So, while we let our ideological rivalries get in the way of developing national economic strategies, we run the risk of letting yet another industry that we once mastered slip away. China has intentionally become a world leader in battery innovation/production. It's the leading maker and consumer of electric vehicles. 43% of cars sold in March had a plug, a total of 743,000. The U.S.?  135,000. We need to understand what’s really happening here, and recognize this for what it is: A global competition for the future of mobility. Then we need to get behind a national policy – irrespective of party is in power – to develop better battery tech & lower cost vehicles. The effort to remain competitive won’t be comfortable or easy. Mistakes will be made along the way. A leading industry is at stake, supporting millions of well-paying jobs. Do or do not, there is no try.

WHAT is UP with EV Charging companies?? Sales growth The last few weeks haven’t been a stellar stretch for the EV Charging community. We’ve seen EV Charging customer service company Eva declare bankruptcy, Enel X pulled their Juicebox product off the market, and utility giant ENGIE ceased distributing their EVBox brand after declaring total losses of €800 million. Ouch. Moreover, publicly listed CPOs like ChargePoint fell from a high of over $46 in 2021 to just a $1.30 today. Sound familiar? It’s similar to SPAC’d EV OEMs like Lucid, Canoo, Fisker and Lordstown. So, what’s going on? The first is Covid money that hit the economy, created inflated expectations (and inflation) in most industries.  Suddenly EVs and charging became the flavor of the month. Until it wasn’t. Yet, market wise, the sales results tell a different story.  EVs are doing rather well, up 8% YTD in the US and 20% globally. Sure, it’s not the 50% to 100% growth rates we’ve seen, but it’s still solid expansion. Recently, I asked a couple of C suite managers at EV Charging companies about their business, and broadly they’re seeing the same as EV sales: expanding sales, but slower growth rates. To quote one: “We’re seeing 30% year on year growth. It’s not the 100% growth we saw a couple years ago, but it’s still very good.’’ The second is that EV charging is infrastructure, and that means a need for patient capital. For large investment firms, surviving a downturn isn’t an issue. However, in this space, some companies over extended themselves with high debt from intensive capital outlays - bad news when interest rates rise. This is leading to distressed assets and business closures. Thirdly, chargers in the field have been suffering significant problems with reliability. Several studies have found that 20% to 30% of EV chargers are down at any point in time. While reliability is improving, there are still big gaps in uptime, usually created by poor maintenance, inconsistent fault reporting, and ad hoc technician service allocation. Here at Vision Mobility, we’re working with WattsUp to fix charger reliability issues and create a pathway to drastically improve uptime. WattsUp has built an AI-powered charger maintenance software platform that leverages machine learning algorithms to detect anomalies and look for potential failure patterns. Is bp pulse eyeing Tesla's Supercharger Network? 👀 In a bold move that could reshape the electric vehicle (EV) charging landscape, there are murmurs suggesting that BP Pulse, might be eyeing Tesla's Supercharger network.... In 2023 they did pledge $1 billion to U.S. EV charging efforts by 2030 and made a landmark $100 million order for Tesla’s charging hardware. With all the chaos that has ensued this week, this development (if went ahead) could provide a significant step forward to hitting the 400,000 ultra-fast chargers that are needed to serve 40 million EVs by 2030. The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station. One of my frustrations with policymakers is that they tend to become policymakers to avoid doing math. Here is an interesting analysis of the ramifications of electrification. @jonathan lesser lays out some math. Adding EVs and heat pumps to every house will double household electricity demand. It will also increase demand peaks. We do not have the grid to handle that. One proposed solution is household batteries. He lays out the math of that--$3tr for the US alone. Ugh. Two things got me interested in renewable energy: economics and national security. Economically, I could not understand why electricity prices go UP when you add the "free" energy from wind/solar to the grid. I learned that the reason is two-fold. One, transmission costs go up because solar/wind farms are built farther from population centers than traditional generation. But the bigger reason is that, because they are intermittent generators, you need batteries and/or backup generation for when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. Thus, you need two generation systems, and that is expensive. From a national security perspective, China controls 70% of the renewables supply chain. Increasing our dependence on a country that pays for Russia's war in Ukraine and that literally attacks us every day in the cybersphere seems...dumb. So what can we do if we want clean energy and energy independence? The obvious answer is nuclear energy. It mitigates all of the problems inherent in renewables. Currently, however, due to unscientific regulations like LNT, nuclear is prohibitively expensive to build in the US. Does it have to be?
