I really enjoyed breaking in our new studio to sit down with Temporal Technologies Co-Founders Samar Abbas and Maxim Fateev for the latest episode of Founded & Funded. Temporal was founded in 2019 based on an open-source microservices orchestration engine project but is the result of a more than decade-long partnership between the two co-founders that spanned their time working on different iterations of the same thing at AWS, Microsoft, and Uber. In this episode, Samar, Maxim, and I dive into the challenges of building an open-source ecosystem while also working on a commercial offering and scaling a successful company, how to navigate and adjust a product roadmap in an ever-changing world of AI and large language models, and how to successfully build an early startup team, navigate through a CEO transition, and bring on a startups first independent board member. I’m thrilled to be announcing that Notion Capital is leading the $15m Series A investment in Cogna today. In the industry, we like to think that software has been eating the world. But when you look at the data a better description would be more of a nibble. Depending on what source you look at the software industry represents between 5-8% of global GDP. Contrast that with the services industry that represents between 60-70% of GDP and worth around $25 trillion on a global basis. Most services have been out of reach for the software industry. They have either been too complex or too specialized for off the shelf software to access in any economically viable way. But that’s beginnning to change with GenAI leading to the emergence of ‘service as a software.’ Cogna is at the forefront of this opportunity - building precision software at scale and delivering huge productivity gains for traditional industries. 💰Sharing a List of 80 Black-led VC funds (US based): About this list: I realized that I couldn’t find a current list of Black-led funds as of 2024 when a lot of new funds have launched over the last couple of years including GPs Sydney Paige Thomas, Terri Burns and more. I have been gathering a list of these funds in my network, and that I could find publicly over time so wanted to share with the ecosystem. Only 2% of VC funds are Black-led: I found 80 funds (maybe there’s more!). There are 3,417 VC firms in the US (according to NVCA). Founders - These funds invest from pre-seed through growth, some with a focus on diverse founders, others more broadly. ⅔ of them have OPEN funding applications that I’ve linked in the sheet. LPs - As mentioned, a number of these funds might not be in the databases used for tracking, so hope to get some more Black-led funds on your radar! Team San Diego! I though you may find this as surprising as I did...we are not alone. Read this quick article from Jon Prentice's (Silicon Valley Bank) interview with with James Newell (Voyager Capital), published in GeekWire on Seattle's innovation ecosystem....they lament the SAME issues as we do in San Diego: * Lack of angel investors, (Especially, it calls out, given the local giant tech co's) * "We need low-conviction check writers." * Lack of "cachet associated with being an angel investor" - We have similar efforts (as described in the article) to drum up angel activity: NuFund Venture Group and, Interlock Capital (read the article and you'll see why the Interlock effort is tops as relates to "paying back into the ecosystem") Connect.org strives to 'connect' innovative companies with investors of all types (angel, VC, PE...) - just see "Innovation Day". Founders, what would you want to hear from a VC who loves your idea but is at capacity? It's a good problem to have, but right now at Developer Capital we have a full pipeline to diligence of incredible Founders and innovative ideas. Deal memos take him, talking to customers takes him, helping existing Portco's takes time. Time is our gating factor. But we keep meeting with Founders who's ideas we think are worth doing the work on. My current approach is to meet with these founders, but be transparent about our backlog. If they dont hear back from us for a couple weeks they shouldnt freak out. Is this the right approach? Seed VCs are turning to new ‘pro rata’ funds that help them compete with the big firms Alpha Partners, SignalRank and now SaaS Ventures help seed VCs pay for shares when big VCs try to price — or push — them out Lee Edwards, partner at Root VC, has a saying at his firm that “pro rata rights are earned, not given.” That may be a bit of a stretch since pro rata refers to a term that VCs put in their term sheets that gives them the right to buy more shares in a portfolio company during consequent funding rounds to maintain an ownership percentage and avoid dilution. Still, while these rights are not exactly “earned,” they can be expensive. I want to share a great interview on the Real Vision platform. Their Global Macro series allows laymen such as myself to quickly grasp how macro factors are driving underlying market sentiment. What really stood out for me was part of the conversation around populism, its impact on markets and how that should drive investment principles over the next decade. Populism is contextualized as a political and economic movement driven by widespread public dissatisfaction with the status quo, particularly among the middle and lower classes. This dissatisfaction has been building over decades, driven by rising inequality, stagnant wages, and a perception that the economic system disproportionately benefits the wealthy elite. This in turn has led to significant shifts in the political landscape, with both the right and the left adopting more populist policies. This alignment of both sides towards populist economic policies reflects a broader shift in political dynamics. This aligned political outlook has driven expansive fiscal policies, such as increased government spending and stimulus measures. It also points to a rise in protectionism and de-globalization as populist governments seek to prioritize domestic industries and jobs over global trade. This spending can drive inflation, especially when combined with supply chain constraints and labor shortages. The argument presented is that while these policies might provide short-term relief to the middle and lower classes, they do not address the root causes of inequality and may lead to further economic imbalances. And here's the kicker...….. Historical Parallel: 1968-1982 was another era marked by high inflation, political unrest, and economic volatility, during which time real returns on equities and bonds were significantly negative. Are we in a similar period, where populist policies could lead to long-term market underperformance, particularly for traditional 60/40 portfolios? But then how do we account for S&P being up 21% in 2024? The thesis here revolves around how populist policies tend to lead to increased fiscal and monetary stimulus during election years. It cites historical data showing that, despite overall poor market performance during populist cycles, election years often see strong market returns due to government efforts to stimulate the economy and secure votes. This creates a short-term bullish environment within a broader bearish cycle. These bouts of populist policies rarely die out quickly and the expectation is that we are somewhere in year 4 of a decade long cycle. And my key take away - rely less on passive investments and start to focus increasingly on active investment strategies and, in my personal opinion, bitcoin!! Perhaps think of cycling out some part of the portfolio from ETFs and Mutual Funds into actively managed mandates??
