Key takeaways: 1) OWN your superpower (often something that came out of challenge when you were 5-10 years old and has also been your "too much" of "this" comment from others often enough); 2) Alone you may go fast but TOGETHER we will always ALL go FURTHER; 3) If you're fearing something, get curious, listen to your heart/mind/gut connections and get that thing into one of these buckets: a) You can control it; manage it (this is a small bucket); b) You can influence it (medium sized bucket, get curious); c) LET IT GO and empty that bucket! The size of banks in M&A activity is definitely growing in 2024. Who are the targets for acquisitions in 2024? How does this effect you, your job, your career, your company? 🔸 In February we had Capital One’s purchase of Discover (see link below for details) 🔸 In mid-April we had the Wintrust purchase of Macatawa (see link below for details). 🔸 Now we have UMB’s purchase of Heartland Financial. It is now almost as likely for larger regional banks to be involved mergers as it is smaller banks? While M&A activity is slower in 2024 there are more larger banks involved. What do I love about the culture at KeyBank, and how does that culture translate to the work we do for clients? A story…. About a month ago I was in Cleveland for our Executive Council Meeting with other senior leaders from across the firm. At the meeting, I happened to wear my Yankees cufflinks, not thinking about the fact that just a few days earlier, the Yankees had eliminated the Cleveland Guardians from the MLB playoffs. As luck would have it, during lunch that day, our CEO Chris Gorman sat down at our table. As the conversation of the Guardians season came up, I showed my cufflinks and acknowledged that I was ‘persona non grata’ at the table. Chris gave me some good-natured ribbing, and that was the end of it. Or so I thought…. During Chris’ opening remarks after lunch, he pointed me out to the entire group as a fan of ‘The Evil Empire’. It became a running joke throughout the meeting that if Key continued to perform well, I might be able to afford better cufflinks. A couple weeks later, I received these in the mail, along with a personal note from Chris. What a thoughtful gesture and kind gift, and I will certainly wear these proudly. So what does this tell us about the work that we do for our clients? I don’t know of too many big bank CEOs who would have taken the time like Chris did to find these cufflinks and send them with a personalized note. To me, it is a perfect example of how we work to provide personalized service to our clients. Yes we are a big bank, and yes we have the capabilities and resources to serve clients of virtually any size and complexity. But…. We play with the flexibility, accessibility, and service of a small bank. If we need to go above and beyond to find a solution for a client, I know I can reach out to the top of the house to advocate for that client. We can get creative, and we get things done. We are truly the best of both worlds. Size and strength, combined with flexibility, creativity, and accessibilty. That’s our culture. It starts from the top with a CEO who is willing to take the time to share a thoughtful gesture like these cufflinks, and that translates to how every employee works daily to go above and beyond for our clients.
