Too many companies think employees are the problem when it really is the processes that have been created that employees are told they have to follow. Let the employees do their job with self-service, breaking down the silos that have been created (you know, the departments that segregate powers of who can and will do what). Breaking down silos and allowing your proccesses to become self-service doesn’t make jobs obsolete, it allows your employees the opportunity to iterate and improve the systems, allowing you to improve your time to market delivering value to your corporate customers. I started exploring ancient wisdom for leadership when I was 35 years old. Since then, I've... • Led my team to consistently exceed quarterly delivery targets. • Earned a reputation for ethical leadership and trust among colleagues. • Cultivated a culture of resilience and adaptability within my organization. • Facilitated several successful cross-departmental collaborations, fostering innovation. If I had to do it all over again, here are 5 things I'd do differently. 1. 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. At the time, I thought focusing solely on business metrics was a good idea. It wasn't. It led to burnout, lack of personal growth, and a disconnection from team morale. Instead, I'd embrace Aristotle's 'eudaimonia.' Setting a clear vision and leading ethically will: • Energize your team • Enhance personal fulfillment • Foster a culture of excellence 2. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞. I used to believe relationships would naturally develop over time. They don't. Instead, embrace Confucius' insights on relationships early on. Building trust-based relationships from the get-go will: • Enhance team cohesion • Drive engagement and innovation • Create a respectful and empathetic work environment 3. 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭. One of my biggest mistakes was worrying about uncertainties. I shouldn't have. If I had to do it all over again, I'd adopt Epictetus' control principle right away. Because focusing on what you can control will: • Reduce anxiety • Increase resilience • Enhance adaptability 4. 𝐃𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦. Years ago, I wasn't open to philosophical thinking for leadership. Big mistake. Not only did it limit my leadership capabilities, but it also delayed personal growth. I probably would have experienced greater professional fulfillment if I'd embraced ancient wisdom earlier. 5. 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲. It took me years to realize that ethical leadership is crucial. Don't chase short-term gains. Don't feel pressured by conventional metrics. Focus on virtue and excellence, because they build lasting trust and success. TL;DR: 5 things I'd do differently to achieve leadership success, faster. • Embrace Self-Fulfillment and Ethical Vision. • Build Relationships Before Challenges Arise. • Focus on What You Can Control First. • Embrace Ancient Wisdom Early On. • Always Lead Ethically and Virtuously. Interesting, thought-provoking question: What's the difference between being 'thankful' and being 'grateful'? Are gratitude and thanksgiving really the same? Is there a substantial difference or is it just semantics? Working on a few ideas on this and am curious to know other's thoughts.
