This article was written for K12 education, but is just as applicable to higher education with several helpful resources. If you are exploring with AI in your classroom, share your successes and challenges with your more reluctant colleagues. If you are reluctant to try AI in your classroom, get with a colleague who is already using AI in their classroom. In order to prepare students for their careers, educators have to be getting students familiar with AI uses in various disciplines. Just today, Ethan Mollick posted: "I see “AI won’t take your job, someone using AI will take your job” all the time on this site. I don’t like this frame because: 1) “Your job”’ is more likely to transform over time than be “taken” 2) Some jobs will really disappear with AI 3) Using AI is going to get easier, it is (sic) isn’t a secret priesthood 4) Organizations ultimately need to integrate AI into their structures, it isn’t all about what individual workers do" Higher education is the bridge to careers of the future, and faculty must respond and adapt sooner rather than later. https://lnkd.in/gr-fAy2J

I've been staying away from political news as much as possible since the election, but as a #highereducation officer who is involved in #accreditation, it's important to take a clear look at what is coming on January 20th, and prepare for the worst. The National Education Association has prepared this guide for what to expect, based on #Project2025. I won't mention specifics (read the article), but keep in mind: when Trump said he would be "dictator for one day" he was referring specifically to January 20th, when he plans on issuing hundreds of #ExecutiveOrders to enact this agenda. They will be challenged, and courts will issue injunctions, any smart #highereducationleader should assume they will try to do literally all of it. (Just a note: two stated goals -- abolishing the #DOE and using accreditation to punish "woke" universities -- are mutually exclusive. College Closure Alert: The higher education landscape is shifting dramatically. In just the first 9 months of 2024, 28 degree-granting institutions have closed - nearly double the total closures from 2023. Key findings from The Hechinger Report: a. Nearly 300 colleges and universities offering associate degrees or higher closed between 2008-2023. b. 60% of closures were for-profit institutions. c. Only about half of affected students successfully transfer to other institutions The driving factors: a. Declining birth rates = fewer high school graduates; b. Post-COVID enrollment challenges; c. Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation, breaks it down. #HigherEd's challenges are much bigger than #FAFSA. Jamie walks us through root, concurrent, and co-conspiring challenges. It's too easy for higher ed to blame COVID of FAFSA. And these have created enormous challenges. But the credibility gap must also be acknowledged/addressed. Doing so requires efforts on two fronts (in my opinion): (1) INTERNAL: colleges and universities must adapt, evolve, and create conditions that support and allow for both; and (2) EXTERNAL: colleges and universities must become far more intentional (and better) and communicating their mission, value, and impact to external constituents. I always appreciate Jamie's clear, concise, and to-the-point writing. I've had the pleasure working with him (and many others) on the Council on Higher Education as a Strategic Asset (HESA). 2024 will likely mark the end of the post-Covid boom in international student mobility. While at the onset this sounds like a problem for various countries and higher education institutions that rely on their large international student populations, it is most decidedly not. Of course, students will not stop pursuing education abroad – rather, this simply means that growth will even out to pre-Covid levels, thus enabling both the students and the recipient countries and institutions to focus on the quality of education, rather than the quantity of students annually. It also gives space to new, emerging education hotspots to take centre stage. Places such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and the UAE are now in a unique position to capture the interest of new generations who are more interested in pursuing a high-class education in places where post-graduation opportunities abound. Combined with residency in that area, they will be fully set up for any future developments.
