Are you a sustainability professional deep in the weeds trying to fill out CDP's new integrated 2024 questionnaire by the Sep/Oct deadline? Well, you're not alone. In widely-shared LinkedIn post, Anastasia Kuskova, CEO of sustainability data startup Sirius, stated that the latest questionnaire approaches 2,000 pages and over 5,500 questions. Many commenting on her post shared similar sentiments about the length and lack of user-friendliness of the new format, including one who complained that “navigating the questionnaire hasn’t become any easier” since she started reporting to CDP more than five years ago. Last month, I spoke to CDP's CEO Sherry Madera on the Eco-Business Podcast, who tried to clear the air. Madera maintained that there are just 450 questions in the questionnaire and “never is a company going to be asked them all". However, she acknowledged that CDP needs to ensure that the questions it asks – which reap some 2,900 data points – are “multi-use” so companies can “embrace the fact that this is a positive thing that they’re spending money, effort and resources on, as opposed to being a burden.” For instance, starting this year, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), or those with under 1,000 full-time employees and US$240 million in annual revenue, will only be subjected to about 10 per cent of these questions, she said. But even with recent initiatives aimed at simplifying ESG reporting to bring up disclosure rates, evidence supporting the dominant theory of change – that rising disclosures will lead to more ambitious climate action – has been mixed so far. A MSCI Inc. report in May revealed that despite Asia’s rising rate of corporate disclosures in the last decade, 20 of the largest Asian utilities are still way off track from net zero emissions pathways. Does this disconnect between climate reporting and actual action suggest there are cracks in the dominant theory of change? Yesterday Tanya Pilbersek announced updates for the Global Nature Positive Summit 2024 scheduled to launch in Sydney from October 8th - 10th. In a message released yesterday Tanya reaffirmed the Australian government's commitment to UNEP-WCMC's Global Biodiversity Frameowrk (yes, another framework) as well as their commitment to improving: 1. Nature reporting and disclosure 2. Greening the financial system 3. Integrating agriculture and nature 4. Gaining consensus on metrics 5. And having 0 new extinctions (shoutout Sustainable Investment Exchange who's ensuring this doesn't happen to the Skate population). Unfortunately, the summit is invite-only and so we'll have to wait with baited breath to hear what comes out of it, but hopefully we can see some financial commitments made to protecting nature. I was lucky to be introduced to the concept of Natural Capital by Michael Molitor 2 years ago and since having learnt about it have taken an active interest in better understanding how we can begin to use 'carbon markets' to fuel the development of nature-based solutions (this is a whole other topic in upon itself). Personally, I'm very excited for Greenhouse's upcoming workshop with BWD Strategic on Friday where we're diving deeper into the role tech and innovation plays in helping to protect nature. Consumers today are bombarded with products boasting eco-friendly credentials. Organic labels, nature imagery, and promises of sustainability create a shimmering facade but often mask a deceptive practice: #greenwashing Greenwashing lures us in with promises of environmental virtue, but crumbles under scrutiny, leaving us disillusioned. This tactic preys on our desire for a healthier planet, manipulating our purchasing decisions with misleading information. A recent RepRisk survey exposes a startling 70% increase in greenwashing within the banking and finance sector. This erodes trust in all sustainable financial products (SFPs). Consumers need confidence that "green" labels reflect genuine environmental impact. However, the allure of eco-friendly products often comes at a premium. A Harvard Business Review study suggests that 65% of respondents are willing to pay more for genuine sustainability, highlighting the link between price and perceived quality. Public demand for SFPs has skyrocketed in recent years, driven by climate change and social issues. Sustainable finance can be a powerful force for good, potentially mitigating climate change and fostering equality. A recent Triodos Bank study revealed that over half of "green" savers in Britain unknowingly invest in fossil fuel-supporting institutions. Fortunately, there's a counterpoint to this deception. A Gartner survey reveals that 69% of CEOs see sustainability as a growth opportunity, while 87% of Indian leadership expresses concern about greenwashing. This reflects a growing commitment to authentic sustainability efforts. Sustainability is now a top-10 business priority, surpassing even productivity.  Additionally, 54% of CEOs acknowledge changing weather patterns are impacting their operations. The tide is turning. The UK's Financial Conduct Authority is implementing new rules to combat greenwashing and empower consumers. These regulations aim to ensure that "sustainable" financial products live up to their claims and are backed by evidence. Regulatory tools like Pigouvian taxes are emerging to address misleading environmental claims. Globally, governments have taken decisive steps against green tall tales, with the Federal Trade Commission in the U.S. casting a wide net with its “Green Guideline,” and the European Union setting forth stringent “Eco-label Regulations”. While these rules are crucial, consumer education is equally important.  Understanding these regulations will empower individuals to make informed investment decisions that truly align with their values. The battle against greenwashing is ultimately a fight for authenticity.  As consumers, we must become vigilant guardians of our financial well-being and the environment. Wield the power of scrutiny, demand transparency, and hold institutions accountable. Only then can we navigate the financial landscape and make a true difference for our planet. The Home Planet Fund, a new independent nonprofit, is launched to support local and Indigenous communities in combating climate breakdown through nature-centric approaches. Backed by $20 million seed funding from Patagonia, the Fund operates with trust in Indigenous Peoples, allowing invested communities to autonomously decide how to utilize the support without burdensome application processes or data tracking requirements. Collaborating with Indigenous-led NGOs across Asia, Africa, Oceania, and North America, the Fund focuses on supporting traditional practices such as Maasai pastoralism and Pacific Island wisdom, aiming not only to bolster local efforts but also to disseminate Indigenous knowledge worldwide. “Indigenous Peoples and tribal communities have been doing this work for centuries, but they’re not being supported well enough.
