As RFK Jr. takes the reins at HHS, 2025 could mark a pivotal year for health communications. In an era where public health narratives are shaped often by platforms like TikTok rather than by the CDC, the need for science-backed education has never been greater. Patients are increasingly using social media to self-educate, which makes clear, compelling, and evidence-driven storytelling critical. And yes, some of this will be from corporations/brands but at the end of the day we will have to lean on trusted voices. I see certified physicians and patient-led communities playing hero roles in bridging the gap between credible data and accessible communication. Companies like MedFluencers and Savvy Cooperative are already leading the charge, proving that health literacy and authenticity can coexist on these platforms. With rare disease communities already demonstrating how empowered, knowledgeable patients can drive better outcomes, could this become the evolving model for all healthcare communications?

Is Your Data-Driven Story Memorable? Reporters are bombarded with data, but are we, as PR pros, making it useful for them? I appreciate PRWeek’s recent stories on agency Q3 earnings. According to the reports, agencies experienced low single-digit growth at best, and most anticipate a continued challenging operating environment ahead. As Big Valley Marketing’s Founder and CEO Tim Marklein put it, Q3 was “lumpy and bumpy.” While we were able to achieve double-digital growth, it was definitely hard work. When organizations are not performing as expected, it is rarely a “math problem.” It is usually an operation and/or a leadership problem. Most successful agencies have a deliberate business strategy that deploys several approaches to enable growth. Developed annually and visited regularly, this strategy has to include how to drive organic and inorganic growth and lines of action to minimize client churn. Here are five simple things agencies can consider to not just survive but thrive: ✅ set a long-view plan early, ✅ manage your practices and client portfolios with discipline and agility, ✅ mobilize your team vertically and horizontally, ✅ activate your collective network, and ✅ not lose sight of what your clients need and what you are good at. Client needs will evolve, markets will shift, and securing the desired budget or scope will always take work. For meaningful growth creation, it is simply not enough to have a “chief growth officer,” an "agency growth driver," or a "head of business development." Journalists are spilling the tea about what they like and don't like. Frank Strong of The Sword and the Script shared the results of a recent Cision survey. He pulled the stats that PR pros need to know about to improve their odds of success. 42% of reporters say credibility is the top challenge facing journalism. Tip: Avoid adjectives and hyperbole when you pitch. 67% of journalists use social media to source information. Tip: Keep your social feeds active and relevant. 55% of journalists want exclusives. Last week, I had the chance to attend the PRWeek Healthcare Conference in NYC with my colleague, Theresa Liddy Dolge. I enjoy this conference every year, not simply because it’s fun to reunite with former colleagues and clients, but we get to hear from and connect with industry leaders on some of the most pressing health issues. Here are some of the biggest learnings we took away: 👩‍⚕️ Women’s health was a hot topic, with period positivity serving as the opening keynote. While progress has been made in how we talk about and treat menstruation, women in the US – more than in any other country – still face shame and restrictions related to their periods, including a lack of free period products in schools. Brands have an opportunity to lean into existing gaps to address women’s health head on and educate consumers in a positive way. 🤝🏼 Authenticity is key in creating partnerships to advance health equity. Organizations that meet communities where they are can make a bigger, more positive impact. 🔓 Weight stigma and bias are pervasive in our society. Although we’re seeing significant innovations in how we treat excess weight with anti-obesity medications, they are out of reach for many people living with obesity due to high costs or supply issues. It’s clear we can’t simply educate about obesity and weight health – we have to support and advocate for systems that ensure greater access to treatment. 👩🏾‍🤝‍👨🏻 What we say and how we say it is critical – particularly when trying to reach historically disregarded communities. From grassroots organizations to advocacy at the state level, it’s important for healthcare communications to be backed and informed by research and have set KPIs to maximize impact. As healthcare continues to evolve, our mission at Inizio Evoke Comms remains the same, to make health more human. Pro PR Tip 💡 Build media connections and relationships before you need them. Disinformation is a growing problem and having reporters who already are on your side and know what you stand for is the best way to combat the Internet trolls - which seem to be everywhere (even in places you'd expect to be credible). It's much harder to get your commentary placed in the midst of disinformation if they've never heard of you before -- but if they've covered you before and trust you, they'll continue to trust you. Because while you can't totally avoid the dark side of the Internet - repeating your values publicly, prioritizing a positive message and stacking reporters who champion your work will always help you come out on top. 🔥 P.S. December's feature: The Intersection of Politics and Health Equity: A Marketing Perspective The recent election results have sparked deep concerns among many Black Americans, particularly regarding how political shifts could impact health equity and access to essential services. For communities that have fought tirelessly to secure basic rights and quality healthcare, these fears are not unfounded—they are rooted in historical precedents and the current political climate. Many worry that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) efforts will be deprioritized or even eliminated in the wake of political changes. These initiatives, which have been instrumental in addressing systemic inequities in healthcare and beyond, risk being sidelined, leaving several communities vulnerable. For healthcare marketers, this raises critical questions about how to navigate this new landscape while continuing to prioritize cultural resonance and equity in communications. Fear of Backsliding: A Crisis for Health Equity People are voicing fears that access to quality healthcare—a challenge even in the best of times—will become even more restricted. These concerns are particularly acute for individuals and families who rely on government-supported programs to bridge gaps in healthcare access, as potential cuts to these programs could exacerbate disparities. In a political environment that threatens to erode these safety nets, the risk of deepening inequities becomes even more pressing. One area of acute concern is maternal and fetal health. Black women already face disproportionately high rates of maternal mortality, a disparity driven by systemic racism, unequal access to care, and implicit bias within the healthcare system.
