I’m thrilled the Academy has published my paper on the history of analog workflow in film sound on their Digital Preservation Forum. In my experience, understanding film sound workflow and choosing the best possible audio source is the most important part of sound preservation and restoration. Typically, the best sounding digital restoration is the one with the least amount of digital restoration possible. By selecting the best analog source and transferring it in the best possible way, the bulk of digital processing can be avoided.

In this next Omniscope video I cover two tools: the Sat/Lum scope and the Channel Plot graph. The Sat/Lum scope is essential for spotting colour dominance and saturation in your highlights and shadows, which is why I have it set up in most of my Omniscope layouts. The Channel Plot is like a cross section of the 3D Color Cube scope - it gives you a clear representation of colour intensity within the primaries and allows for easy balancing and matching using colour wheels. Pixel Pitch and Viewing Distance of LED Display Pixel pitch is a technical specification used to differentiate LED tiles. It's the center-to-center distance between two pixels, measured in millimeters. Smaller pixel pitches result in higher pixel density, leading to higher resolutions and more detailed content. For example, a 10mm pixel pitch will have lower resolution and a grainier image compared to a display with a smaller pixel pitch. When selecting an LED video wall, determining the optimal viewing distance (OVD) is key. This is the distance from which viewers can no longer distinguish individual pixels and see a uniform image. Smaller pixel pitches allow for shorter optimal viewing distances, as the closer LED clusters blur together sooner. For instance, boardrooms with viewers close to the screen may benefit from a fine pitch LED display with a pixel pitch below 2.5mm. Conversely, larger pixel pitches suit long-distance viewing, like concerts or billboards. There is no universally "best" pixel pitch. The ideal choice depends on the application and viewing distance. To determine the right pixel pitch, consider these factors: Optimal viewing distance (OVD): A rule of thumb to calculate the ideal pixel pitch is to divide the OVD (in meters) by two. Size: Pixel pitch affects the number of modules needed to achieve a specific resolution. A finer pitch with higher pixel density requires fewer modules for the same resolution, resulting in a smaller screen size. Cost: Finer pixel pitches generally cost more due to increased LED density and manufacturing complexity. Choosing a denser pitch than necessary won't enhance visual quality and will only increase expenses. In conclusion, selecting the best LED video wall involves considering the viewing distance, content resolution, available space, and budget. The Semicolon Saga: Navigating Standards and Real-World Implementations in Broadcast Engineering 🚨 In broadcast engineering, even the tiniest details can cause massive headaches. Recently, I found myself deep in the weeds of one such issue: a missing semicolon in an SDP file from Ross Video's Ultrix platform caused a Blackmagic Design receiver 🎥 to misinterpret a 1080i50 stream as 1080p25, leading to a cropped and incorrect display. Not cool. After some serious troubleshooting 🛠️, I discovered that simply adding a semicolon at the end of the a=fmtp line in the SDP magically fixed everything. But hold up—it wasn’t just a quick fix; it sparked a deeper discussion about standards like SMPTE ST 2110 and our old friend, RFC 4566 📜. Curious to see how others handle this, I did a little digging 🕵️‍♂️. What did I find? A mixed bag of SDP examples from all over the internet—some with the semicolon, some without... Whether it's examples from brands like RIEDEL Communications 🎯 or various open-source implementations (GitHub projects & cie..), there seems to be no consistent approach. This inconsistency only highlights the grey area we're navigating when it comes to these standards. When I reached out to the pros at Ross Video, they confirmed that RFC 4566 requires semicolons to separate parameters, not necessarily end a line. But, and here’s the kicker, examples in different parts of the standard are inconsistent 🤷‍♂️—one shows a semicolon at the end, another doesn’t. This ambiguity leaves us in a tricky spot where device behavior can differ based on interpretation. Ross Video’s team acknowledged the dilemma: adding the semicolon might solve the problem with Blackmagic Design, but it could also break other workflows where the semicolon isn’t expected ⚖️. This is the balancing act we face in our industry—ensuring that standards are followed while being flexible enough to handle variations. This journey highlights the importance of open communication 🗣️ between engineers, manufacturers, and standards bodies to prevent minor inconsistencies from causing major issues. It also underscores the need for device flexibility to ensure smooth interoperability across the board. In the end, this experience is a powerful reminder that in our field, every character matters—sometimes even a single semicolon can make all the difference 💪.
