Proud to make this list of top communicators in New York - I'm in great company with several friends and former colleagues. Thank you City & State for the recognition. I didn't share this last week given the election but feel now is the right time to reengage. Communications counsel has never been more important than now. This will be an unpredictable few years, and it's important to be as prepared as possible. From all the data I've seen, this election was a change election, with voters frustrated about inflation and economic uncertainty coming out of the pandemic. Even though we've recovered faster than any other country, too many Americans still feel real pain. This election was not a referendum on reproductive rights, with ballot initiatives protecting abortion access passing in several states that Trump won. This election was also not about LGBT equality, with almost all exit polls and other research clear that Americans support marriage equality. Much has been written about the role of corporate leaders in our political discourse. I urge companies not to retreat. In this moment, companies need to understand what this election was truly about, stay true to their values, and respond to their stakeholders - including employees and consumers. We built One Strategy Group to make navigating this kind of complex corporate landscape more manageable. No CEO is eager to jump into the political fray, but often these choices aren't up to them. We're proud to help these leaders understand the nuances of their many stakeholders and make sense of an increasingly senseless world.

What is Strategic Communications? #StrategicCommunications is communicating in a way that is well-thought-out and resonates with your designated audience in order to meet your individual or organization goals or objectives. MirLogic’s Director of Strategic Communications, Sheila Consaul, reflects on the multitude of ways to communicate today and how to best reach your audience. There are dozens of ways to communicate in today’s world ranging from the tried and true – the written word and 1:1 conversation – to the technologically enabled means such as email, texting, social media, and online collaboration. Strategic communicators know which medium not only best fits their message, but also resonates with their audience to ensure the highest rate of comprehension and/or action.  For example, a billboard on a highway may be the best way to communicate with nearby restaurants, but would not be as effective in selling insurance.   Knowing your audience and how they best receive, and process information is key to successful communication. Are your team members working remotely or is everyone in the same office? Posters in the lunchroom would not be an effective communication strategy for employees who work remotely. Are your clients visual learners?  Would a demonstration or video work best for them to understand an unfamiliar concept?  How technologically savvy is your audience? Generally, younger people embrace technology more quickly and are more comfortable using it. Next time you need to communicate something, develop a strategy. Think about your audience, the type of information that needs to be understood, the methods of communication available, the timing of the message, and what tactics will likely be most effective. Developing successful communication is often an afterthought, but it should take center stage. What you want to accomplish can be significantly impacted by how it’s communicated.

PR teams need to consistently ensure that messaging stays both relevant and aligned with new regulations. Stay tuned into political conversations. Does your PR team know how to explain the work we do? In too many instances, asking different members of your team how to explain public relations may bring many different answers. The obvious problem with that is that it creates confusion. As we all already know, too many people already don't get what we do. It is less about saying the exact words but more about general cohesion of the story. If your agency hasn't gone through this exercise with your team, it is something to think about.

This post is particularly interesting, stemming from Ragan and The Conference Board’s survey of communication and marketing professionals. While the piece focuses on internal staff and workplace culture, companies should consider the entire multi-stakeholder environment and its impact on reputation and behaviors. We are in an unprecedented time where political conversations and opinions are straining relationships. The biggest challenge in business and society today is that remaining silent, once the easy option, can now be even more damaging to corporate reputations. My advice is to adopt a real-time, continuous approach to monitoring stakeholders' perceptions and likely behaviors.
