Being a good leader means having humility. When members of your team aren’t performing it’s easy to assume they’re bad employees. Rather, take a look inside yourself. Is their performance related to your style? Are you micro-managing them too much? Not managing them enough? Are they simply in the wrong job? Finding and leveraging a team members strong points instead of focusing on the weak ones can make all the difference in your team trusting you.

Wisdom for the week... A simple word today: Listen We often say we hear what our team members are saying yet often before they have finished talking we already have formulated an answer. Two things then occur: 1. The team or team member feels unheard 2. They will be less inclined to speak upin the future So what is the answer. Simple, be quiet and listen. Stop coming in with canned answers and be willing to listen. Also, empower your team to come up with solutions for the problem they are bringing forward. Hear it, take time to digest it, and even if that solution is not moved forward praise them for thinking of it. While we may be leaders it is not our job to hold others back rather it is our job to grow leaders to take over and to move it to the next level and that starts with closing our mouths, opening our ears, and understanding with our minds what is being presented to us.

Little Leadership Lesson #0003 Choose Walls of Fame over Walls of Shame. If you reach a point where next level improvement will require Walls of Shame, then the data for those walls must be 100% accurate. Once you build a high performing team, then Walls of Fame will be all that you need. Too often leaders start by posting who is not meeting expectations. When increasing accountability or trying to improve outcomes it is better to first highlight who is exceeding expectations. This puts the improvement in a positive light rather than punitive light. Eventually, you may need to share who is falling short, just don't start there.
