I was in a discussion with a couple of folks that are about 15-20 years younger than me recently on leadership and mentoring. Love being able to share from what well of wisdom I might have with these folks, so I happily engaged. A recurring theme they kept bring up - time after time - was Emotional Intelligence. EI is defined as the ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others, and is often heralded as a critical skill for success. However, if we simply peel back the layers of this shiny new term, we find that it isn't much more than what previous generations simply referred to as “character.” But there is one key difference... Emotional intelligence encompasses several key components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. These elements enable individuals to navigate social complexities, lead and motivate others, and excel in their personal and professional lives. For instance, a manager who can empathize with their team’s struggles and motivate them through challenging times is often seen as emotionally intelligent. Traits such as honesty, integrity, empathy, and resilience were considered the hallmarks of a person with good character. These traits were not just valued but were seen as essential for building trust and respect within communities. When we compare the traits associated with emotional intelligence and character, the overlap is striking. Self-awareness and self-regulation in EI are akin to the self-discipline and integrity valued in character. Empathy and social skills in EI mirror the compassion and interpersonal respect that define good character. The biggest difference in my mind is really the underlying moral compass. It is entirely possible to fake EI. You can act with emotional intelligence while at the same time being morally bankrupt. Just open the news... You don't have to read long. "The more change we bring to our current posture often requires more posture be brought to that change" Meaningful change in any organization - rather it is to process, culture or go to market strategy requires a tremendous amount of organizational buy in from your internal teams. Decisions made in silo often result in nightmarish results. Was reintroduced to a book that I read a while back - "The Speed of Trust" by Stephen Covey. I love a couple of the concepts that he introduces in the work. Here are a couple of my favorite takeaways without giving up all the greatness contained in the pages! Trust yourself FIRST. When your character and competencies come together - great things will happen Just be Honest - even if you mess up or make a big mistake, just keep integrity at the forefront of the relationship. Honesty maintains trust even in the face of disappointment. Know your capabilities - Know who you are, and maybe equally important, who you aren't. Don't commit quickly to taking on processes or projects that are outside of your brand. It is a really great read, and if you have not read it...I highly recommend it. Stephen M. R.
