Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to talk about the Use Cases for the Application of Machine Learning to Packaging Design and Innovation, that I continue to find new processes and workflows in our practice and then bring the learning to my ArtCenter Graphic Design students at the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena California. Human-Centered Design & Manufacturing: A U.S. Blueprint for the Future? In a world where efficiency often comes at the expense of workers, the U.S. must lead the way toward a different model. Human-centered design and manufacturing offer a compelling vision that demonstrates how efficiency and growth can coexist with workers' rights and dignity. Reports about TSMC’s Arizona facility previously suggested its semiconductor yield rates exceeded those of its Taiwanese counterpart. However, this claim has since been called into question as sources have been removed or clarified. While the accuracy remains uncertain, it raises a critical discussion: Could human-centered manufacturing serve as a path forward not just for the U.S. but globally? This isn’t merely about surface-level innovation. It’s about proving that inclusion, collaboration, and sustainability can be the foundation for industrial growth. This model could inspire allies like South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan to reconsider their approaches to manufacturing. Looking forward, human-centered manufacturing could also address broader challenges, like housing supply. With AI-driven modular design and robotics-based prefab construction, we can improve efficiency and reimagine how housing markets function. By integrating renewable energy systems, advanced HVAC, and high-performance building envelopes, this approach could enhance energy efficiency and help achieve Net Zero goals. 💡 The future of manufacturing must prioritize humanity. When Space Becomes Home. A new talk with my partner Mardis Bagley about how spaceflight is evolving to make it easier for the rest of humanity to reach for the stars. Which technologies can support our bodies and minds in an extreme environment featuring microgravity, isolation, stress, limited resources, and radiation exposure? We discussed the role of colors, sound design, sensations, textures, food, culture, rituals, and the neuroscience of rest. We also discussed why we go to space and accelerate innovation in biotech, material science, resource extraction and human resilience. Home is the familiar. It is safe, personalizable, and a place of community. Exploring space gives us the perspective to see that home is also planet Earth, and that she needs care and protection. I recently picked up a Bambulabs A1 Mini and it’s WILD. The attention to detail in the hardware design is next-level: linear rails for XY&Z, a color touchscreen display, vibration compensation, quick swappable nozzles, lightning-fast bed leveling, noise canceling built-in, AMS, the list goes on and on. Also, it costs $350. This gives my P1S a run for its money at half the price. I’m using it to print out business cards with PLA matte filament through a 0.2mm nozzle onto a smooth build plate, and after some slicer optimizations, the results are INSANE. By identifying Creativity Anxiety, understanding the creative characteristics of good thinking and learning, exploring how and when to strategically activate the “Imagination Network” through purposeful daydreaming and other interventions, course participants will develop a personal creative practice to elevate the art of teaching and to inclusively harness the creative genius within all learners. Creativity Anxiety inhibits student achievement in all domains including STEM, and limits educators’ capacity to design and implement meaningful learning experiences. Although interventions for math anxiety are widely deployed, anxiety specific to creative thinking has only recently been identified and interventions are just beginning to be developed and tested.
